The 53-year-old singer had spent two weeks in a serious condition in hospital following a crash near Cork, southern Ireland.
He was placed in an induced coma but his condition had deteriorated badly, according to a Facebook update posted on Sunday.
Black's best-known hit, "Wonderful Life", peaked at number eight in Britain's singles chart in 1987 and was also a big hit in a string of other European countries.
