A collection of 14 paintings by some of the most renowned names in contemporary Indian art, opened for public viewing at the Taj Mahal hotel here today.
Modern masterpieces including works of Francis Newton Souza, Vasudeo S Gaitonde, Nalini Malani, Bhupen Khakhar alongside other contemporary artists from the collection of Shumita and Arani Bose are put out in the exhibition organised by global auctioneer Christie's.
The Bose's are cofounders of the New York-based Bose Pacia art gallery, set up nearly 20 years ago.
The two-day exhibition ending August 21 offers a glimpse into the finest paintings that will be up for auction at the Asian Art Week in New York next month.
"When we select a painting, it is not just about getting a painting, it is but a study of the history of who held the work, which museum it was in or who curated it," Senior Specialist and Head of Sale at Christie's, Deepanjana Klein said today.
She was elaborating on the process of purchasing a painting by the auction house.
The auction would also feature work of Nalini Malani, considered to be one of the most sought after artists by museums across the world.
Her work "The ecstasy of Radha" is a painting comprising several acrylic sheets and depict various episodes of the protagonist's life.
Also included is an oil-on-canvas painting by Bhupen Khakhar titled "Waiting for Darshan" which depicts festivity. A frame by V S Gaitonde "Untitled" offers viewers a chance to see the depths of a monochromatic painting.
The upcoming auction on September 17 also contains a Francis Newton Souza's painting titled 'The Butcher', which is a symbolic representation of humanities downfall.
