Sahitya Akademi award-winning Bengali writer Nabarun Bhattacharya died today, his family sources said.
Son of famous litterateur Mahashweta Devi, the 66-year-old author was suffering from cancer and had been admitted to Thakurpukur Cancer Hospital a few days back.
His first novel novel 'Herbert' in 1993 earned the Sahitya Akademi award and was also adapted into a Bengali film of the same name in 2005, by Suman Mukhopadhyay.
The director also filmed 'Kangal Malsat' (War Cry of Beggars), another of his work.
The writer has also won the Narsinha Das award and Bankim Puraskar and used to edit the Bengali literary monthly 'Bhashabandhan'.
Readers remember him for creating a strange set of human beings called 'Fyatarus' who can fly by chanting a mantra and carry out anarchic attacks on evil political forces for fun.
The characters appear in works like 'Fatarur Bombachaak' and 'Fyatarur Kumbhipaak'.
