A delegation of YSR Congress Party leaders today met President Ram Nath Kovind at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, seeking his intervention in immediate grant of special category state status to Andhra Pradesh.

The delegation included the five Lok Sabha MPs -- Mekapati Rajamohan Reddy, P V Midhun Reddy, V Varaprasad Valagapalli, Y S Avinash Reddy and Y V Subba Reddy -- who submitted their resignations to Speaker Sumitra Mahajan on the last day of the Budget Session on April 6.

The leaders also submitted a letter to the President written by the party chief Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy.

"In a parliamentary democracy such as ours, if an assurance given to a state on the floor (of Parliament) is not honoured, people will lose confidence. We request your kind intervention to prevail upon the Government of India to grant (special category state status)," Reddy said in the letter.

The four-page letter referred to the process of bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in 2014 and the assurances made by previous and present governments on the special category status.
