It was shocking to read about the ingenious use of cellular phone technology for criminal purposes, as happened recently in a kidnap case in South Delhi. Unfortunately, the two calls for ransom received by the kidnapped boys family were traced to a cellular phone number which had been rented out to an unidentified person utilising the pre-paid SIM card facility. The kidnappers would have been behind the bars had it been mandatory for all cellular phone users to furnish references and addresses.

The government should make it mandatory for all cellular phone users to furnish their addresses so that the identity of the callers using them for criminal purposes can be established by the police without any difficulty.
