The state government yesterday decided on a time-bound programme of making Andhra Pradesh a "clean green state" by, with January 1, 2000. The transformation will be brought about through an education and motivation programme, in which the cooperation of the student community, farmers, bureaucrats, and other sections of the society will be enlisted.
According to finance minister, P Ashok Gajapathi Raju, every second Saturday, which is a state government holiday, would be utilised for the education and motivation of the people.
He said the cabinet has decided to amend the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad Act to make punishment for "nuisances" more stringent, with the fine going upto Rs 10,000.
A cabinet sub-committee was set up to enlist cooperation of the people and also receive and process suggestions from the public on the programme.
