Colgate, Hll Spat Continues Toothpaste Ads

The legal sparring between Hindustan Lever Ltd and Colgate Palmolive reached the Supreme Court once again yesterday with the two companies moving cross appeals to stop the each other's toothpaste advertisements.
While the court ordered status quo regarding the order of the Monopolies and Restrictive Trade Practices Commission restraining Colgate from carrying on the `Suraksha Chakra' campaign, it admitted the appeal of Hindustan Lever against certain claims made by Colgate in its advertisements.
According to the order, the `Suraksha Chakra' campaign can be continued.
The bench, consisting of Chief Justice M M Punchhi, Justice M Srinivasan and Justice S S M Quadri, posted the cases for final hearing to after two months.
This is the second round of appeals in the Supreme Court by the two companies which have a major share in the domestic toothpaste market.
Earlier, they had fought over the claim of Hindlever that `Pepsodent' was 102 per cent more effective than its rival. This time, it is the `Suraksha Chakra' slogan and other claims made by the rivals.
They allege that the claims are not based on scientific data and disparage the rivals.
