Inflation Rises To 6.25 %

This rise has been attributed to an increase in petroleum prices three months ago. Inflation has gained over 1.2 percentage points since the beginning of the current rising spell.
It was placed at 8.6 per cent during the corresponding period of the previous year, even though the final over final computation showed a high of 8.9 per cent during the period.
The breach of the five per cent mark in the week ended July 6 had ended the under five per cent inflation run registered since the week ended February 3, 1996.
The rise in wholesale prices during the period under review was mainly due to higher prices of wheat, jowar, maize, ragi, fruits and vegetables, eggs, fish, gur, atta and mutton.
