It is pathetic to see senior government officials and chiefs, bank chairmen etc. moving heaven and earth, and more effectively, influential politicians wielding power to get extension after retirement or end of tenure. The history of those who have got extensions shows that their only merit was that they colluded, co-operated or collaborated with the minister "" power broker "" just before retirement/end of tenure. Many such worthies had figured in CBI enquiries or figured in scams.
A government that exists because of and with Left support should not countenance any request for extension, re-employment as adviser etc of persons past 58 years or who have completed their tenure as chiefs of PSUs/banks etc.
If these eminences and indispensables could not accomplish or achieve in the decades they served, how and what would they achieve in the next one or two years with their weak bodies (diabetes, BP, cardiac, kidney etc. afflictions) and exhausted brains? Pleas that the person concerned is seized with an important task like suppression of insurgency, electoral reform, GDR issue, Ninth five-year plan etc are specious and devoid of merit. These are normal and on-going tasks which younger and more vigorous people can do better.
If the eminences are truly so, they can be engaged by the numerous institutes/consultancy firms/journals etc. Extensions are plainly rewards and compensation for favours rendered to politicians in power. They all have made enough. The younger ones should not be deprived of the chance to show their mettle.
