Leather exports during April-July 1996 fell to Rs 1,718.82 crore from Rs 1,817.20 crore during the same period last year. CMIE has already shown a negative growth of 17.3 per cent in leather exports in the first quarter of fiscal 1996. Indian exporters are changing their strategy to deal with the problem. Some are looking at new markets, while others are refashioning their products to bring them in line with international trends.

If these efforts pay off, it will still be a while before Indian exporters can get back to the steady growth clocked during the past few years.
