Motorola Inc. on Monday reported higher third-quarter earnings of $266 million, or 44 cents a share, despite a $95 million pretax charge to exit the Macintosh computer-clone business. Earnings were above year-ago results of $206 million or 34 cents a share. Excluding the previously announced charge, equivalent to 10 cents a share after taxes, Motorola earned $328 million or 54 cents a share, a penny above the mean estimates of analysts surveyed by First Call.
