BJP vice-president Mridula Sinha is tipped to be the new chairperson of the National Commission for Women, according to party sources. The post is vacant after Mohini Giri's tenure ended in July.

Among the contenders is media personality Mrinal Pande, but BJP leaders are opposed to her candidature as she is an outsider. They would like a person from the BJP to be nominated to the post.

The ministry for human resource development is expected to announce the name of the new chairperson any day.
