RPG Enterprise, in collaboration with the US-based Dairy Farm International, is setting up a chain of drug stores all over the country named Health & Glow.

The new joint venture company, RPG Guardian Private Ltd, between RPG Enterprises and the $12 billion retailing giant Dairy Farm International, will stock a wide range of pharmaceuticals, both prescription and OTC, cosmetics, toiletries, personal products, creaming agents and a range of health foods.

The company has been set up with an authorised capital of Rs 4.5 crore and proposes to open nearly 50 drug stores in the first phase.

V Balaraman, managing director of Ponds India Ltd, inaugurated the first store in the drug store chain at Annanagar East, Chennai, yesterday.

The air-conditioned drug stores will be stacked with some 5,000 items for sale and will have a self-service format.

The drug stores will be manned by pharmacists and trained health and beauty staff.

The stores will remain open seven days a week.

According to an official release, the drug store chain is a part of RPG groups plan to play a pioneering role in retailing in the near future.

An international food retailing, manufacturing and wholesaling group, Dairy Farm is a part of Jardine Matheson Group of Hongkong.

The group operates nearly 1,400 outlets comprising principally super markets and also holds a 50 per cent interest in Maxims Caterers, Hongkongs largest restaurant and catering chain with over 300 outlets in China, Hongkong, Manila, and Tokyo.

The Dairy Farm group has interests in more than 2,500 retail outlets spread all over the country and a large number of drug stores and pharmacies under the brand name Guardian at Singapore and Mannings at Malaysia, Hongkong and Taiwan.
