South India is in love with television. Households in the region not only own more televisions than their counterparts in other regions but also spend more time watching TV than those living elsewhere, a new survey has found. According to, Broadcast India, the survey conducted by BARC, the total number of individuals owning TV in South India — Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Kerala — is 259 million. Compared to this, the number of TV owning individuals in North, West and East India is 209 million, 221 million and 146 million respectively. The survey was conducted covering 300,000 households across 4,300 towns/villages and 68 per cent of the urban markets in these regions. It was found that South India has been witnessing a year-on-year growth in average time spent watching TV. The region generates a viewership of around 12 billion impressions every week.

Huawei gains

According to Gartner, Inc., in the second quarter of 2018, Chinese smartphone company Huawei secured the No. 2 position among smartphone vendors worldwide. In doing so for the first time ever, Huawei has pushed Apple to the third spot. Experts credit the company's investment into channels, brand building and positioning of the Honor devices behind the improved sales. Numbers show that worrying signs are there for both Apple and Samsung. This is because while Samsung maintained the No. 1 global smartphone vendor’s spot, its sales declined by 12.7 per cent in the second quarter of 2018. Overall, the sale of smartphones to end users grew by two per cent in the second quarter of 2018.
