The remand was ordered by the special CBI court in connection with the alleged irregularities in the ARM deal, which is said to have caused a loss of Rs 1.68 crore to the national exchequer. The judge decided that his bail application would be entertained at the end of the remand period.
Bharihoke also ordered that the former minister would be under medical examination at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in CBI custody, where an eight-member committee of experts from different wings of AIIMS was constituted on Monday to examine him.
Accompanied by CBI officials, Sukh Ram had earlier been brought from AIIMS to the Tis Hazari courts amidst tight security.
The CBI counsel sought a one-week remand of the former minister on the ground that investigations were at a crucial stage and there was a need to interrogate him.
A crowd had gathered outside the courtroom which had been cordoned by policemen.
He was later taken back to AIIMS. A doctor from the AIIMS team said Sukh Ram was suffering from chest pain, diabetes and high blood pressure and would be kept under observation for the time being.
Sukh Ram underwent an chest X-ray, echocardiogram and holter test at AIIMS on Monday as doctors said that a decision on whether he would continue to be in hospital would be taken after the report.
Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court adjourned till September 19 the application of Sukh Ram's counsel challenging the powers of Bharihoke to entertain the anticipatory bail application of the former minister.
Justice S K Mahajan observed that the case was only of academic interest and adjourned the case.
