Tata Steel (Tisco), the private sector steel major, has commissioned the second slab re-heating furnace at its hot strip mill in Jamshedpur. This marks an important milestone in the Phase IV modernisation programme at the Tisco works.
According to a company press release, the state-of-the-art furnace will enhance the production capacity of the hot strip mill by two million tonne per annum. The installation of the second furnace was completed in a record nine months time, the release said.
The second furnace is considered to be a more reliable model than the first and requires less maintenance.
The automatic sequencing control enables common charging system for both the furnaces. The furnace is equipped with the latest technological innovations.
The microprocessor-based distributed control system with shared displays will monitor and control all important process parameters of the furnace. An optimisation computer system, which is presently under implementation, would also help enhance the performance of the furnace.
While superior technology has been an important feature of the second furnace, environmental and pollution control measures have also been given top priority. The furnace is fitted with modern facilities for conservation, treatment and recirculation of water.
A 75 meter chimney has been erected for the discharge of waste gas. The specifications of the chimney are as per IS 6533 1989 and CPCB regulations, the press release said.
The detailed engineering and implementation of the slab reheating furnace project has been carried out by M N Dastur & Company in co-ordination with the modernisation group of Tata Steel.
The charging and discharging systems of slabs have been supplied by SMS/TGS, the release said.
