India vs England, 1st Test Day 2: Third session
- Virat Kohli took a giant stride towards exorcising the ghosts of 2014 with a masterful century as he singlehandedly pulled India out of the woods against England on an eventful second day of the first Test.
- Kohli's 149, which will rank amongst one of the finest hundreds by an Indian batsman on English soil, enabled the visitors to reach 274 thereby bringing down the first innings deficit to only 13 runs. England had scored 287 in their first essay.
- At stumps, England were 9 for 1 in their second innings with an overall lead of 22 runs.
- The day certainly belonged to Kohli, whose dogged determination for a course correction was evident during an innings where he scored more than fifty percent of his team's runs even as he was booed by England fans for his version of 'mic drop' celebrations on the first day.
- He got a couple of reprieves early in his innings but his intent to scrap it out under overcast conditions with an incisive Sam Curran (4/74), wily James Anderson (2/41) and relentless Ben Stokes (2/73) asking probing questions, stood out.
- His 22nd Test hundred had 22 boundaries and a six and the unbridled joy on competing the coveted hundred was palpable as he let out a wild roar and kissed his wedding ring.
- He was beaten but he looked unfazed. He covered the swing, the footwork was more assured whenever he met the ball on the frontfoot.
- Kohli's innings is worth its weight in gold simply because of the situation the team was in. Dhawan and Murali Vijay (20) did the hardwork of seeing off the new ball with a 50-run stand but it all went awry after that.
- Curran used conditions to good effect as he trapped Vijay leg before, got KL Rahul (4) to play a lazy shot and then Dhawan edged one to the slip cordon.
- Ajinkya Rahane (15) and Dinesh Karthik (0) joined the procession to make it 100 for 5 before Hardik Pandya (22) added 48 with his skipper.
- But the most effective support came from NOs 10 and 11. Ishant Sharma (5) added 35 with his skipper running those cheeky singles while Umesh Yadav (1) blocked 15 deliveries only to find his skipper cut loose at the other end.
- Finally he was the last man out trying to cut Adil Rashid and got a standing ovation from the crowd.

India vs England 1st Test, Day 2: Second session
- Skipper Virat Kohli kept India afloat with a patient half-century even as rookie quick Sam Curran continued to torment the visitors, who reached 160/6 at tea on the second day.
- At the break, Kohli (53) and Ravichandran Ashwin (6) went back undefeated after England managed to take three more wickets in the post-lunch session.
- Resuming the second session at a precarious 76/3, Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane (15) started on a watchful note, helping India reach the three-figure mark before all-rounder Ben Stokes struck twice to inject further agony in the visitors' dressing room.
- Stokes first accounted for the wicket of Rahane, who needlessly flirted at a short of length delivery only to be caught comfortably by Keaton Jennings at third slip.
- The all-rounder then cleaned up stumper Dinesh Karthik with a straight delivery, to claim his 100th Test wicket.
- Stokes could have immediately jolted the Indians with the wicket of new man Hardik Pandya (22), only for the reviews to change the decision of the umpire.
- Thereafter, Pandya played the perfect second fiddle, raising 48 runs for the sixth wicket with his skipper, who took full advantage of the life he got on 21 when Dawid Malan dropped him at second slip of James Anderson.
- Kohli not only surpassed his previous best score of 41 in England but also went ahead to notch his 17th Test fifty off 100 balls before Pandya departed after being trapped in front by Curran.
- Struggling at 148/6, Ashwin joined Kohli in the middle and the right-handed duo took India safely to tea.
- Earlier in the morning session, Curran rocked India with three quick wickets of Murali Vijay (20), Shikhar Dhawan (26) and Lokesh Rahul (4) to spoil a bright 50-run opening stand in reply to England's first innings total of 287.
- Left-arm seamer Sam Curran rocked the Indian top order with triple blow leaving the visitors reeling on 76 for three at lunch.
- This was after England finished their first innings at 287 with Mohammed Shami (3/64) taking the final wicket.
- Young Curran (3/23) came in as first change to remove openers Murali Vijay (20), Shikhar Dhawan (26) along with no 3 KL Rahul (4) in a space of eight deliveries as India went from a solid start of 50 for no loss to 59 for 3.
- At the break, skipper Virat Kohli was batting on 9 while his deputy Ajinkya Rahane was undefeated on 8. India still trail by 211 runs.
- Vijay and Dhawan provided a good start seeing off the new ball pair of James Anderson (0/20 in 10 overs) and Stuart Broad (0/22 in 4 overs) for almost an hour.
- Vijay was solid as usual, leaving the ball well, while Dhawan looked to play down the ground. It helped that Anderson and Broad bowled fuller early in their spells and didn't get the ball to move around as much as the Indian pacers did on day one.
- Additionally, they looked to rotate strike as much as possible, going for quick singles even if this approach looked dangerous from the outside.
- It didn't help matters that England lost an early review as Anderson's loud appeal was turned down, with DRS ruling in favour of the umpire's decision.
- It was almost an easy-going partnership for the opening duo as they brought up 50 off just 70 balls before the drama began.
- Curran hit the perfect length as first-change bowler and immediately trapped Vijay leg before in the 14th over. Umpire Aleem Dar turned down the appeal but DRS overturned the decision as England finally got their breakthrough.
- It became 54 for two in three balls as Rahul was played on. It brought out skipper Kohli, who was booed on his walk to the crease.
- Curran made it a quick triple blow as Dhawan was caught at second slip in the 16th over.
- Things could have been worse as three balls later, Kohli edged Anderson to Jos Buttler at gully with the fielder failing to latch onto a tough chance despite putting in a fine dive. Kohli didn't open his account then.
- Anderson improved his length and troubled Kohli for the next two overs, before Adil Rashid (0-5) brought things to a close in this session.
- This was after India quickly wrapped up the English innings, who lost their last seven wickets for a mere 71 runs.
- Ravichandran Ashwin (4/62) opened the bowling in the morning but couldn't get his fifth wicket, instead finishing with his best haul in Test cricket across South Africa, England and Australia.
- Shami had Curran (24) caught behind in the second over of the morning to put the Indians in a driving seat.

India's record at Edgbaston cricket ground
When it comes to Edgbaston, there is nothing but painful memories for the Indian cricket team, as far as Test cricket is concerned. India's record at Edgbaston is exceptionally poor with five losses in six Tests stretching back to 1967. The last time India played a Test match at this venue was in 2011 and it was a masterclass from England opener Alastair Cook that guided the hosts to victory.
This time around Virat Kohli must avoid the mistakes made while picking the playing eleven like he did in the previous overseas tour to South Africa. There, the team management had backed an in-form Rohit Sharma over Ajinkya Rahane. This time around, an in-form KL Rahul is bidding for a spot. Both Kohli and coach Ravi Shastri have maintained that as a third-choice opener, Rahul must wait for his chance. But the fit-again batsman's fine form might just compel them.

England opener Keaton Jennings on Kohli's mock celebration and his dismissal: England opening batsman Keaton Jennings sees nothing wrong in Virat Kohli's buoyant celebration, after the India captain ran out his opposite number, Joe Root. "I suppose the best players in the world make those lucky breaks or have them go in their favour," he said. "That's the way it is. I've made an error, misjudged the ball, and it's ended up in my stumps."
What Mohammed Shami said after the first day play: Mohammed Shami was easily the best Indian fast bowler on Day 1of the first Test between India and England at Edgbaston. Shami, who returned to the Indian side on Wednesday after a gap of over six months, ends the day’s play with a figures of 2 for 64 from a staggering 19 overs that he bowled on day 1. Back among the wickets and satisfied with his performance on a slow pitch, Shami said all the bowlers did well to stick to their line and lengths to reduce the hosts to 285 for 9 at stumps. "The pitch is a little slow, there is hard work for sure, we had to maintain a good line and length all day. It was a little tough at the start because the pitch was slow and a little damp. By the evening, though, it became better. As a bowling unit, we did well after they were 216/3," pointed out Shami.
