Inox Wind Limited has secured exclusive rights from its US-based technology partner AMSC to manufacture 2 MW electronic control systems (ECS), a critical component in wind turbines, in India. At present, Inox imports all its ECS requirements from AMSC. In addition, the company has also signed an agreement with AMSC to collaborate on the development of a 3 MW turbine for India.

The ECS licensing agreement with AMSC grants Inox Wind the perpetual and exclusive right to indigenise the production of electronic control systems, which will play a pivotal role in ensuring continual supply of one of the critical components of a wind turbine generator. It will also further strengthen the company’s control over its supply chain of vital components. Apart from significant savings that will accrue to Inox due to domestic in-house manufacturing of electronic control systems, it also provides Inox with security in terms of sourcing this vital component, over the long term.

Additionally, the company has also entered into a collaboration with AMSC to develop a 3 MW turbine specially designed for the Indian market. AMSC’s wind turbine designs range from offerings of 1.65 MW to 10 MW and more than 15,000 MW of installed capacity has been operating globally for multiple years based on AMSC’s designs. The 3 MW turbine will eventually extend Inox’s product offerings in India and reinforce the company’s position as the leading wind turbine manufacturer in the country. Inox Wind currently offers its clients multiple blade and tower variants of its 2 MW turbine and is in the process of launching an additional variant with a 113 meter rotor diameter and 120 meter hub height tower.

“The license agreement to manufacture electronic control systems in-house is a momentous occasion in the company’s journey to becoming the leading wind energy solutions provider in the country. It offers the company overarching long term benefits and further strengthens the company’s control over its supply chain. The development of a 3 MW turbine reinforces our firm commitment to provide our clients with superior, energy efficient, resource saving technologies and ensures that Inox Wind continues to play a pioneering role in the wind turbine industry in India. Inox views AMSC as a strategic long term partner for technology of wind turbines as these arrangements will help Inox stay on the forefront of WTG technology,” said Devansh Jain, director, Inox Wind.

The Boston-headquartered AMSC, with its Windtec solutions, provides wind turbine electronic controls and systems, designs and engineering services that reduce the cost of wind energy. Through its Gridtec solutions, AMSC provides the engineering planning services and advanced grid systems that optimise network reliability, efficiency and performance.
