Agitation for Maratha quota Turns violent in Maharashtra, dozens injured

A protest for Maratha reservation in Jalna district of central Maharashtra turned violent on Friday leading to dozens of persons including police personnel getting injured, officials said. Police used baton-charge and fired teargas shells to disperse a violent mob at Antarwali Sarathi village on Dhule-Solapur road in Ambad tehsil. Villagers also claimed that police fired some rounds in the air, but officials did not confirm it. The protesters, led by Manoj Jarange, had been staging a hunger strike demanding reservation for the Maratha community at the village since Tuesday.

Simultaneous polls require at least 5 amendments but will yield savings

Holding simultaneous elections to Lok Sabha and state assemblies would need at least five constitutional amendments and a large number of additional EVMs and paper-trail machines costing "thousands of crores of rupees", but will yield a huge long-term saving to the public exchequer, officials said on Friday. A parliamentary panel had examined the issue of simultaneous elections in consultation with various stakeholders, including the Election Commission. The committee made certain recommendations in this regard, the officials said.

BJP national president JP Nadda on Friday met former President Ram Nath Kovind at the latter's residence in New Delhi on Friday. The meeting assumes significance as the Centre constituted a committee headed by the former President to explore the possibility of 'One Nation, One Election'. If the proposal comes into effect, elections for Lok Sabha and state assemblies across India will be held simultaneously with voting taking place at the same time. The government has decided to call a Special Session of Parliament from September 18-22 where it is speculated that the government could bring a bill for this proposal to take effect.

The opposition Congress on Friday asked the Left Front government in Kerala to initiate criminal proceedings against a former Secretariat employee for alleged cyberbullying of Achu Oommen, daughter of late Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, in the wake of the upcoming Puthuppally bypoll. The opposition party urged Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to cancel the former Secretariat employee's reappointment at the Institute of Human Resources Development (IHRD), an autonomous educational institution established by the Government of Kerala, and register a criminal case against him. The accused, Nandakumar, was reportedly a former leader of a Left-oriented service organisation.

ED conducts raids in Rajasthan to probe 'Jal Jeevan Mission' irregularities

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday conducted multi-city searches in Rajasthan as part of a money laundering investigation into alleged irregularities in the implementation of the Centre's 'Jal Jeevan Mission' in the Congress-ruled state, official sources said.

A number of premises belonging to engineers, contractors and some former state government officials in Jaipur, Alwar and a few other cities are being searched, they said.

Navy''s stealth frigate Mahendragiri with advanced sensors launched

The national capital is all set to host the G20 Summit scheduled on September 9 and 10. As part of its preparations, the trainee commandos of Delhi Police conducted the helicopter slithering exercise on Friday. The helicopter slithering exercise was conducted by the second batch of trainee commandos of Delhi Police at the Police Academy in the capital, ahead of the G-20 Summit. On May 31, Delhi Police gave training to the first batch of recruited commandos, at the Delhi Police Academy in Jharoda Kalan, using an M-17 helicopter.

Mary Kom writes to Shah for protection of Kom villages in Manipur

Boxing star M C Mary Kom has sought the intervention of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to ensure "security forces prevent both warring groups from intrusion to Kom villages in Manipur." In a letter to Shah on Thursday she said the Kom community is an indigenous tribe of Manipur and one of the smallest among the minorities. India's manufacturing PMI jumps to 58.6 in August, hits 3-month high

India's factory growth accelerated at the fastest pace in three months in August, driven by strong growth in new orders and output, according to a private survey that however also showed job creation was at a four-month low. That is good news for Asia's third-largest economy, which grew 7.8% in April-June, slightly above a Reuters forecast of 7.7%, led by robust demand, and was expected to remain a bright spot in the global economy. The Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index, compiled by S&P Global, jumped to 58.6 last month from 57.7 in July, the highest since May and confounding a Reuters poll expectation for a drop to 57.5.

Nomura raises India's economic growth forecast for FY24 to 5.9%

Nomura on Friday raised its economic growth forecast for India's fiscal 2024 to 5.9% from 5.5%, after data showed economy grew at its quickest pace in a year in the April-June quarter.India's Gross domestic product (GDP) expanded a more-than-expected 7.8% on an annual basis in the June quarter, Thursday's data showed, accelerating from 6.1% growth recorded in the March quarter.

'Headline numbers' overstated by full percentage point: Congress on Q1 GDP growth

The Congress on Friday alleged the GDP numbers released for the first quarter of the current fiscal are overstated by a full percentage point because of the price deflators used. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh also said that going by the present trends, the growth for 2022-23 may hover around 6 per cent. With growing inequality, even this "disappointing GDP growth of 6 per cent" will not lead to rising incomes for the vast majority of Indians, he stressed.

After domestic LPG price reduction, commercial LPG prices cut by Rs 158

In a major relief to LPG consumers, Public sector Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have slashed the price of 19 KG commercial LPG gas cylinders by Rs 158, according to ANI report. The new prices will be effective from today and Delhi's retail sales price of 19kg commercial LPG cylinder will be Rs 1,522. Earlier, on the eve of Raksha Bandhan, the price of Domestic LPG was reduced by Rs 200 by the central government as a gift to women of the country.

Former Prez Kovind-headed committee to explore 'one-nation, one-election'

The government has constituted a committee headed by former president Ram Nath Kovind to explore the possibility of "one nation, one election", sources said on Friday. The move comes a day after the government called a special session of Parliament between September 18 and 22, the agenda for which is under wraps.

Over the years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pushed strongly for the idea of simultaneous Lok Sabha and state assembly polls, and the decision to task Kovind to look into it underscores the government's seriousness as a host of elections approach.
