CBI starts polygraph test on Kolkata Police ASI

The CBI on Wednesday began the process of conducting a polygraph test on Kolkata Police ASI Anup Dutta to decipher his alleged links with Sanjay Roy, arrested in the rape and murder case of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, officials said. Dutta will be the eighth person to undergo a polygraph test in this case. According to the officials, Dutta, posted in the Kolkata Police Welfare Committee, had allegedly extended a number of favours to Roy, a traffic police volunteer.

BJP workers clashed with the police at several places across West Bengal on Wednesday as they tried to enforce a 12-hour shutdown in the state. The shutdown partially affected daily life in the state with many people choosing to remain indoors apprehending trouble on the roads. Former Rajya Sabha MP Roopa Ganguly and MLA Agnimitra Paul, were detained from south Kolkata's Gariahat area when they were urging traders to down their shutters and requesting people to support the bandh. Kolkata Municipal Corporation councillor Sajal Ghosh was detained from his residence in Sealdah shortly after BJP workers scuffled with TMC supporters while trying to enforce the bandh in the nearby Koley Market.

BJP's 12-hour shutdown partially affects life in Bengal

Rail and road blockades at several places in the state since the early morning affected public transport services, inconveniencing people. In state capital Kolkata, the usual weekday flurry was missing with a lesser number of buses, auto-rickshaws and taxis plying. Private vehicles were also significantly less, even as markets and shops remained open as usual. Schools and colleges were open, though the number of students was lesser. In many private offices, attendance was low with employees asked to work from home. However, attendance was as usual in government offices.

BJP claims two of its workers shot at in Bhatpara

The Opposition BJP in West Bengal on Wednesday morning alleged that two of its workers were shot at in Bhatpara in North 24 Parganas district.

Police, however, claimed that the two men were beaten up by some people outside Anglo-India Jute Mill. Former BJP MP Arjun Singh alleged that miscreants owing allegiance to the Trinamool Congress fired the shots. The ruling party rejected the allegation.
