Cargo traffic across 12 major ports in the country increased by 3.75 per cent year-on-year in May to 72.04 million tones (MT) from 69.43 MT handled in the corresponding month of 2023 with nine such ports showing positive growth.
Visakhapatnam Port registered the maximum cargo growth in cargo handling at 22.05 per cent during the reporting month followed by Chennai Port with 9.10 per cent, Cochin Port with 7.78 per cent and Mumbai Port with 5.89 per cent, according to data released by the major ports' apex body, Indian Ports Association (IPA).

Gold prices edged higher on Monday as signs of cooling US inflation lifted hopes for interest rate cuts from the Federal Reserve this year, while traders awaited a slew of US economic data due this week.
Spot gold was up 0.2% at $2,331.84 per ounce as of 09:49 a.m. ET (1349 GMT), after posting a 2% gain last month. Prices hit an all-time high of $2,449.89 on May 20.

The country's coal production rose by 10.15 per cent to 83.91 million tonnes (MT) in May compared to 76.18 MT in the year-ago period.
Coal production by state-owned CIL rose by 7.46 per cent to 64.40 MT in May compared to 59.93 MT in the year-ago period, according to the Coal Ministry's provisional data.
Coal India Ltd (CIL) accounts for over 80 per cent of domestic coal output.

The commerce ministry's investigation arm DGTR has recommended for continuation of anti-dumping duty on a kind of thermoplastic material coming from China and Korea for five more years with a view to guarding domestic players against cheap imports.
In a notification, the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) has said that there is a likelihood of continuation/recurrence of dumping and injury to the domestic players if the existing duty on 'Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride (CPVC) - whether or not further processed into compound' are allowed to cease.

The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) on Monday directed to initiate insolvency proceedings against debt-ridden Jaiprakash Associates Ltd, admitting the plea filed by private lender ICICI Bank.
Jaiprakash Associates Ltd (JAL), which is the flagship firm of Jaypee Group, is mainly into construction, cement and hospitality businesses. JAL has sold many cement plants in the last few years to reduce its debt.
