The Indo-Pacific is a complex and differentiated landscape that is best understood through more intensive engagement, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said here on Saturday.
Jaishankar arrived in Stockholm on Saturday on his first visit as the External Affairs Minister to Sweden to participate in the second EU Indo-Pacific Ministerial Forum (EIPMF).
Addressing the EU Indo-Pacific Ministerial meeting, he said a generous and strategic approach that caters to economic asymmetries will surely enhance the appeal of the strategically important region.
The meeting is taking place at a time when the Indo-Pacific region has seen aggressive actions by China's military in the South China and the East China Sea.

Odisha Chief Minister and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) President Naveen Patnaik on Saturday said "single" or "double engine" is not important but governance is.
He was addressing party leaders and workers after his party registered a landslide victory in Jharsuguda bypoll, whose result was declared on Saturday.
BJD candidate Dipali Das defeated her nearest BJP rival Tankadhar Tripathy by 48,721 votes.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has asked the secretary general of WFI to hand over the official documents including financial instruments to its ad-hoc panel, making it clear the outgoing office bearers shall have no role in the running of the federation.
The WFI said it has no issues in obeying the IOA order since they were already co-operating with the authorities.
An IOA official, though, has made it clear that the move should not be seen as dissolution of the Federation.
"Once the elections will be held, the administrative powers will go back to the WFI. The newly elected officials will run the show. It's just a temporary move that ad-hoc is managing the affairs of the Federation," the official told PTI.

Soon, the government is going to help millions of people track their lost or stolen mobile phones, as a new portal -- www.sancharsaathi.gov.in -- is set to be unveiled on May 17, which is also the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day.
This new portal will help people track and find their lost mobile phones.
The Sanchar Saathi portal will be officially unveiled by Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on May 17. The portal will be available throughout the country and cater to lost or stolen mobile phones connected to all telecom circles.
As of now, this portal caters only to Delhi and Mumbai circles.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said the BJP's victory in the Uttar Pradesh local body polls conveys people's support for the state's "unprecedented" development under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's leadership.
Taking to Twitter, Modi also congratulated Uttar Pradesh BJP workers and candidates for the "stupendous win".
The ruling BJP won the mayoral elections in 10 of the 17 municipal corporations in Uttar Pradesh, results for which were announced on Saturday, virtually adding a third engine to its "double-engine" government.
The party's candidates won in Ayodhya, Jhansi, Bareilly, Mathura-Vrindavan, Moradabad, Saharanpur, Prayagraj, Aligarh, Shahjahanpur and Ghaziabad.

A Delhi court has granted bail to Deepak Khanna, an accused in the Kanjhawala case in which a 20-year-old woman was dragged to death under a car here on New Year's Day.
The court said the allegations against Khanna did not reveal that he was "in conspiracy with" other accused persons for the offence of murder and that in case of bailable offences, the relief has to be granted mandatorily and not as a matter of concession.
"...the application is allowed and the applicant or accused is admitted to bail on furnishing of a bond in the sum of Rs 25,000 with one surety in the like amount...," Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Neeraj Gaur said in an order passed on Friday.

In a massive drug bust, nearly 2,500 kilograms of methamphetamine worth around Rs 12,000 crore was seized from a vessel in Indian waters along the Kerala coast in a joint operation by the Navy and the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), the anti-drug agency said on Saturday.
The NCB said it was the largest seizure of methamphetamine in the country and a Pakistani national has been detained in connection with it.
Giving details of the seizure at a press conference held here, NCB Deputy Director General (Ops) Sanjay Kumar Singh said it was carried out as part of 'Operation Samudragupt' which targeted maritime trafficking of drugs originating from Afghanistan.

Union New and Renewable Energy Minister R K Singh on Saturday directed the industry to set targets under Green Open Access Rules 2022.
In June 2023, the government notified the Green Open Access Rules 2022 to further accelerate India's renewable energy programmes. These rules were notified for promoting generation, purchase and consumption of green energy including through waste-to-energy plants.
It also enables a simplified procedure for the open access to green power.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) that emerged victorious in the high-stakes Jalandhar Lok Sabha bypoll in Punjab on Saturday secured a vote share of 34.05 per cent, up from 2.5 per cent in the 2019 Lok Sabha election.
AAP's Sushil Rinku defeated his nearest rival, Karamjit Kaur Chaudhary of the Congress, by a margin of 58,691 votes, according to the Election Commission's data.
Rinku, who joined the AAP after quitting the Congress before the bypoll, polled 3,02,279 votes, while Chaudhary secured 2,43,588 votes, according to the data.

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar urged retired bureaucrats on Saturday to use their position to counter "false and anti-India narratives" that seek to tarnish the image of the country's constitutional institutions.
Addressing the gathering at a book release event here, Dhankhar also said democratic governance poses its own unique challenges. He exhorted civil servants to exhibit unwavering and steadfast commitment to the rule of law and the Constitution.
"Political ingratiation of officials with the ruling dispensation in some parts of the country is severely straining the sublimity of federalism. This calls for systemic focus by all concerned," he said without elaborating.

UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath thanked people and congratulated BJP workers on Saturday on the party's massive victory in the urban local body polls and for forming a "triple-engine government" in the state.

Authorities in Bangladesh on Saturday launched a massive evacuation campaign to relocate close to half a million people along the southeastern coastlines as a "very dangerous" tropical cyclone is expected to make landfall in the country, threatening the Rohingya refugee camp, the world's largest.
Cyclone Mocha, one of the most powerful cyclones seen in Bangladesh in nearly two decades, is predicted to barrel towards the Bangladesh-Myanmar border on Sunday.
"Cyclone 'Mocha' is coming. We have kept the cyclone centres and taken all types of preparations to tackle it," Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said.

AAP candidate Sushil Kumar Rinku, a former Congress MLA defeated his closest rival, Congress's Karamjit Kaur by a margin of over 58,000 votes, as per the Election Commission of India.
Rinku was polled 3,02,279 votes, while Chaudhary has secured 2,43,588 votes.
BJP nominee Inder Iqbal Singh Atwal was at the third spot, while Shiromani Akali Dal candidate Sukhwinder Kumar Sukhi, who is also backed by the Mayawati-led BSP, was at the fourth spot.

Avenue Supermarts Ltd, which owns and operates the retail chain D-Mart, on Saturday reported an increase of 7.81 per cent in its consolidated net profit at Rs 460.10 crore for the fourth quarter ended March 31, 2023.
The company had posted a net profit of Rs 426.75 crore in the January-March quarter a year ago, said Avenue Supermarts in a BSE filing.
Its revenue from operations was up 20.57 per cent to Rs 10,594.11 crore during the quarter under review as against Rs 8,786.45 crore in the corresponding quarter last fiscal.

Ten tribal MLAs belonging to the Chin-Kuki-Mizo-Zomi group in Manipur have urged the Centre to create a separate administration for their community in the wake of the recent violent clashes between the Meiteis and tribals.
Of the 10 legislators, 7 belong to the BJP, two from Kuki People's Alliance (KPA) and one Independent.
The two KPA and independent MLAs are also part of the NDA led by the BJP.
As the state of Manipur has miserably failed to protect us, we seek from the Union of India a separate administration under the Constitution of India and live peacefully as neighbours with the state of Manipur, the MLAs said in a statement on Friday.
The legislators alleged that violence was perpetrated by the majority Meitei community and was tacitly supported by the BJP-run state government.

The ruling BJP retained the mayoral seat in the temple town of Ayodhya with party candidate Girish Pati Tripathi defeating his nearest rival Ashish of the Samajwadi Party by a margin of 35,638 votes.
Tripathi bagged 77,494 votes while All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) candidate Rehan secured the third position pocketing 15,107 votes. BSP candidate Ram Murti got 12,852 votes while Congress' Pramila Rajput bagged 4,084 votes, according to the State Election Commission (SEC).
During the campaigning for the urban local body polls, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had targeted the opposition Samajwadi Party, saying, "Any devotee of Ram emerging victorious in Ayodhya in this festival of democracy will create a good impression. But if the person who fired at the devotees of Ram gets votes, it (will) send a wrong message."
In the 2017 urban local bodies polls, Ayodhya had elected its first mayor -- Rishikesh Upadhyay of the BJP.
The urban local body polls were held in two phases -- on May 4 and May 11 -- to elect 17 mayors, and 1,401 corporators. As many as 19 corporators were elected unopposed, the SEC said.

The Covid pandemic has exposed the fault lines in the global health architecture and highlighted the need to make it more robust, inclusive, and responsive while maintaining the centrality of WHO, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said on Saturday.
Virtually addressing the G7 Health Ministerial meeting on Global Health Architecture in Japan's Nagasaki, he said, "When it comes to managing a health emergency, a country's health system is heavily dependent on the global health system."
The Union health minister cautioned against fragmented and siloed efforts in addressing the challenges faced by the world and underlined the need for collaborative efforts to ensure global health security, including a focus on promoting health equity.

The ruling BJP made a winning start to the ongoing mayoral election in Uttar Pradesh with the party candidate winning the post of Jhansi's mayor on Saturday. According to the State Election Commission (SEC), BJP's Bihari Lal Arya bagged 1,23,503 votes, and defeated his nearest rival Arvind Kumar of the Congress by a margin of 83,587 votes.
The Bahujan Samaj Party came third, while the Samajwadi Party secured the fourth position.
The mayor seat of Jhansi was reserved for the Scheduled Caste in the urban local body polls.
The ULB polls were held in two phases on May 4 and May 11 to elect 17 mayors, and 1,401 corporators. As many as 19 corporators were elected unopposed, the SEC said.
