Afghanistan's Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi will visit Deoband in Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur district on Saturday and Agra on Sunday as part of his six-day India trip, officials said. According to Saharanpur police, during his day-long visit to Deoband, Muttaqi will tour Darul Uloom Deoband, one of the most influential Islamic seminaries in South Asia, and meet senior clerics, scholars and administrators of the institution. He is expected to arrive around noon and return to Delhi by evening. Superintendent of Police (Saharanpur Rural) Sagar Jain said police and intelligence units have been deployed and "comprehensive security arrangements" have been made ahead of the visit. The district administration has also coordinated with the Darul Uloom authorities to ensure a smooth programme. Uttar Pradesh Police has arrested Nazir Ahmad Wani, a key accused in the 1993 Deoband blast case, from Budgam district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said on Tuesday. Wani, who unsuccessfully contested the recent assembly elections from the Budgam assembly segment against Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, was arrested by a team of the Uttar Pradesh Police with the help of J-K Police, the officials said. The 51-year-old, who had declared his profession as business in his election affidavit, was out on bail in the 1993 blast case in which four persons, including two UP police personnel, sustained injuries. Wani was arrested in 1993 and released on bail in 1994. However, he did not follow his bail conditions and absconded. Wani, who has a case of wrongful restraint and criminal intimidation registered against him in Budgam district last year, had not mentioned the Deoband blast case in his poll affidavit.
The ban on the entry of women in Darul Uloom, an Islamic seminary here in Deoband, has been lifted. They will now be able to enter the campus, subject to some rules, the institution said. Women will have to wear hijab and have to be accompanied by a family member to enter the campus, according to the rules that came into effect on Friday. The management of the Islamic educational institution, which earlier this year banned the entry of women over complaints of "reels" being shot inside the campus, said videography would be completely prohibited and visitors would have to deposit their phones at the gate before entering. Ashraf Usmani, media in charge at Darul Uloom, on Saturday said that after several rounds of talks, the management has issued rules for the entry of women coming from across the globe.
