As biting cold prevails across the capital, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) on Saturday announced that it has opened its 'barat ghars' (banquet halls) and community halls to shelter relatives and attendants of patients near major government hospitals. NDMC Vice-Chairman Kuljeet Singh Chahal, in a statement, said the step was taken in compliance with directions of the Delhi High Court and in coordination with the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB). He said the facility would remain available till March 15, depending on the availability of community halls. The shelters are meant primarily for patients and their attendants visiting AIIMS, Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and Lady Hardinge Hospital, many of whom are forced to spend nights outdoors during treatment, the statement read. PWD Minister Parvesh Verma on Saturday said that the government is planning to construct a new flyover on the Outer Ring Road to tackle traffic congestion in several parts of North-West Delhi. "The proposed flyover will bring direct traffic relief to commuters from Keshopur, Haiderpur, Punjabi Bagh, Pitampura, Shalimar Bagh, Rohini and adjoining areas of North-West Delhi, which currently witness chronic congestion during peak hours," Verma said. The Supreme Court on Thursday agreed to hear the curative plea of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist Mohammad Arif against the death penalty given to him in the 2000 Red Fort attack case that left three Army jawans dead. The top court had on November 3, 2022 dismissed the review plea of Arif in the case. Arif alias Ashfaq was awarded the death sentence by a trial court in October 2005 and the Delhi High Court had affirmed the view of the trial court in September 2007. He had then approached the apex court challenging the high court's verdict. The top court had in August 2011 affirmed the death sentence awarded to Arif. In a major boost to road infrastructure development in the national capital, the Delhi government approved a six-lane double-decker flyover along Mehrauli-Badarpur (MB) Road in South Delhi, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said on Tuesday. In a meeting if the Expenditure Finance Committee (EFC), the project worth an estimated cost of Rs 1,471.14 crore will be completed by December 2027. "The integrated elevated road project, with a total length of nearly 5 kms, will be developed in two phases. The first phase will cover a 2.42-km stretch from Saket G-Block to Sangam Vihar, while the second phase will extend for about 2.48 km from Maa Anandmayee Marg to Pul Prahladpur," CM Gupta said. The Delhi government will add 7,000 charging points and 100 battery swapping stations this year to expand the city's EV infrastructure and curb pollution, officials said on Monday. The government is expected to notify the Delhi Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy 2.0 by March. Officials said that the new EV policy, combined with PM e-drive scheme, will offer various incentives to boost electric vehicle sales in the national capital. Official data shows Delhi currently has 8,849 charging points against total requirement of 36,150. To bridge the gap of over 27,000 points, the government has set quarterly targets for 2026. According to the plan, 1,000 charging points will be added in the January-March quarter, 1,500 in April-June, 2,300 in July-September and 2,200 in the final quarter, officials said. Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta on Saturday said a forensic examination has found that the video of Leader of Opposition Atishi's alleged derogatory remarks against Sikh gurus was not doctored, and that a CBI probe will be ordered in the matter. Delhi AAP president Saurabh Bharadwaj rejected the forensic report, saying it does not answer the key question of whether Atishi uttered the word "gurus". Delhi Traffic Police issued 2,175 challans and impounded 23 vehicles during a special enforcement drive against traffic violations conducted across six major locations in the capital, an officer said on Saturday. The "zero-tolerance" drive was carried out on January 16, simultaneously at Anand Vihar ISBT, J B Tito Marg, Azadpur Mandi Chowk, Teen Murti Roundabout, Dwarka Mor on Najafgarh Road and Bikaner Chowk in Karol Bagh, he said. "The enforcement focused on violations such as improper parking, stop-line violations, wrong-side driving, no-entry violations and permit-related offences, which are considered major contributors to congestion and road safety risks," Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Monika Bhardwaj said. The police impounded 23 vehicles for serious violations during the drive. The intensified enforcement led to an improvement in traffic flow at the locations, the officer said, adding that similar enforcement drives will continue over the next seven days.
The Delhi government has decided to raise the annual income cap to Rs 1.20 lakh from the previous Rs 1 lakh, to enable more households to be eligible for ration cards. According to official data, due to the absence of clear rules for several years, more than 3,89,883 applications for ration cards have remained pending in Delhi, and over 11,65,965 people are still waiting for food security benefits. Data verification revealed the income details of around 6,46,123 people did not match the prescribed norms. About 95,682 individuals had remained in the system for a long time without availing any benefits. Nearly 23,394 duplicate names were found, while in 6,185 cases, benefits were recorded in the names of deceased persons. Around 56,372 people had themselves requested to opt out of the system. In an effort to improve road safety, the Delhi transport department is considering giving unregistered e-rickshaw operators a one-month window to complete vehicle registration, officials said on Wednesday. Initially introduced as an eco-friendly transport option, e-rickshaws have increasingly become a problem on city roads due to their slow movement, contribution to traffic congestion and safety concerns. According to the official data of the Delhi government, 204,131 e-rickshaws are registered on the Vahan dashboard as of January 2026. However, unofficial estimates put the actual numbers much higher. "A plan is under consideration to give one month's time since the order is issued to unregistered e-rickshaw owners to get registered so that livelihood is also maintained along with safety on roads," the transport department said in reply to a question in the Delhi Assembly's recent winter session. Over 3,500 applicants under the Economically Weaker Sections category could not be admitted to Delhi schools in the 2025-26 academic year, largely due to factors such as parents declining seats because of distance from schools and non-completion of documentation, according to official data. The data from the Directorate of Education (DoE) stated that 29,706 EWS students were admitted in 2025-26 against 33,212 applications, while 3,506 cases of non-admission were recorded. In the preceding academic year, 202425, 26,197 students secured admission out of 28,799 applicants, with 2,603 students not admitted, the data revealed. Delhi government has notified the amendments in the excise rules raising the storage and possession quantity of denatured spirit and enhanced the quota of sacramental wine for religious purposes, officials said on Monday. The upper limit of special denatured spirit that can be stored at licensed premises has been raised from 6,744 kilolitres to 15,000 kilolitres at any given time, said a recent Delhi government notification. The annual authorised possession limit for permit holders has also been increased from 64,000 kilolitres to 120,000 kilolitres. The Delhi Excise (Amendment) Rules, 2025, also revised Rule 20 of the Delhi Excise Rules relating to sacramental wine. Earlier, the Bishop of Delhi was allowed to purchase, transport and possess up to 91 litres of sacramental wine for church use. The Department of Training and Technical Education of the Delhi government is the implementing body of the Pradhan Mantri Skilling and Employability Transformation through Upgraded ITIs (PM-SETU) scheme's hub and spoke model for the transformation of the ITIs in the city. The Dheerpur-ITI cluster comprising Dheerpur-ITI (hub) and four constituent spoke ITIs at Jail Road, Narela, Sirifort and Jaffarpur has been chosen for the implementation of the PM-SETU scheme in Delhi, the officials said. The Delhi government has sent a detailed proposal to the central government agency Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL) for the immediate procurement of 3,330 electric buses. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the Delhi government has requested the Centre and the Ministry of Heavy Industries to include this additional requirement, separate from the already allotted quota of 2,800 buses, under the subsidy model. She made it clear that if any technical hurdles arise with regard to subsidies, the Delhi government is fully prepared to bear the cost itself to ensure that there is no delay in procuring the buses. More than 2.1 lakh consumers have availed the Late Payment Surcharge waiver scheme on water bills since its launch, Delhi government officials said on Saturday. The government aims to recover Rs 5,000 in pending dues of Delhi Jal Board (DJB), waiving late payment surcharge amounts to the tune of Rs 11,000 crore. During a discussion in the Delhi Assembly on Friday, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta also hailed the waiver scheme and its benefits. "Earlier, people had to run around with their high water bills, but our government launched the waiver scheme in the water sector, which has registered 2,10,654 beneficiaries since its launch," Gupta has said. The Reserve Bank on Friday fixed the Ways and Means Advances (WMA) limit for the Delhi government at Rs 890 crore to help it meet any temporary mismatch in receipts and payments. Earlier this week, the central bank entered into an agreement with the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD) to conduct the city government's general banking business, effective from Friday, January 09, 2026. "The WMA limit for GNCTD has been fixed at Rs 890 crore, effective from January 09, 2026," the Reserve Bank of India said in a statement. Accordingly, the revised aggregate WMA limit for State Governments / Union Territories will be Rs 61,008 crore as against the existing limit of Rs 60,118 crore, it added. WMA are temporary advances given by the RBI to the central, state governments and Union Territories to tide over any mismatch in receipts and payments.
Delhi Home minister Ashish Sood on Wednesday said stone pelting during removal of encroachment near Faiz-e-Elahi mosque in Turkman Gate area of walled city, was "unfortunate" and warned that violence will not be tolerated. At least five police personnel were injured after some people allegedly pelted stones and glass bottles at the force when the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) was carrying out a court-mandated demolition on land adjoining the mosque and a nearby graveyard. The police said an FIR has been registered in the matter and five people detained for questioning. Sood said some commercial establishments had illegally come up around the mosque, against which action was being taken in compliance with the directions of the court.
