Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Sunday asked the construction industry players to reduce import dependency, focus on clean and green construction, and work towards earthquake-resistant and modular infrastructure. Speaking during the inauguration of the first edition of Chemicals & Allied Products Export Promotion Council's (CAPEXIL) Vibrant Buildcon 2025, in New Delhi, he said sectors, including housing, infrastructure, commercial real estate, railways, airports, highways, and energy play a key role in boosting the country's economic growth. "Every element, from cement and electricals to security systems and automation, plays a part in this ecosystem," he said. The government initiatives, including 20 new smart industrial cities, improved tourism infrastructure across 50 destinations, and 100 new industrial plug-and-play hubs would help India move from a USD 4-trillion economy today to a USD 30-35 trillion economy by 2047, Goyal added.
A report prepared by the Confederation of Indian Industry's Green Business Centre (CII-GBC) has mandated 15-20 per cent green space allocation for all new residential, commercial and infrastructure projects. The report 'Infra South: Crafting Liveable Environments in Indian Cities' prepared by CII Green Business Centre highlights a plan to transform Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchirappalli, Tiruppur and Salem into sustainable and liveable cities. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin at the recently held South India Annual Convention 2025 released the report which underscores the immense pressure placed on urban infrastructure and the environment due to rapid economic and population growth, exacerbated by climate change. Automakers want the government to provide merit-based policies to support a full range of green technologies and alternative fuels besides allocations to facilitate electric vehicle ecosystem like charging infrastructure to further accelerate sustainable mobility in the upcoming Union Budget. With the automobile industry showing early signs of growth slowing down, they said budgetary initiatives to boost the disposable income of consumers are necessary to support robust growth. India has "great potential" to emerge as a hub for green shipbuilding, backed by the government's strong focus on alternative fuels and renewable energy, a maritime industry expert said on Wednesday. Modernisation and upgradation of Indian shipyards is in progress, while older dockyards are being assessed for reopening and adding more capacities for green shipbuilding given a strong pickup in global demand, said Cristina Saenz de Santa Maria, Regional Manager South East Asia, Pacific & India, Maritime at DNV, a Norway-based testing, certification and technical advisory services provider. "We see great potential in India emerging as a hub for green shipbuilding, driven by its government's strong focus on alternative fuels and renewable energy like biofuels and wind power," said the industry veteran. Oil exploration and production player Josler Energy on Monday announced its collaboration with Heath Consultants, Inc and Indraprastha Gas Ltd under the US-India Low Emissions Gas Task Force (LEGT). As per the collaboration, advanced gas leak detection technologies will be introduced into IGL's gas distribution network that spans Delhi-NCR, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. The MoU, signed between IGL and Heath Consultants at GASTECH 2024, Houston, is a significant step towards reducing methane emissions and bolstering public safety across IGL's network, a company statement said. Josler Energy will provide technical support, field expertise, and training to IGL's employees, empowering them to utilize the latest technologies and best practices in gas leak detection.
