Bihar and Jharkhand on Monday signed a memorandum of understanding to share 7.75 million acre-feet of water from the Sone River, in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, "permanently resolving" the nearly 25-year-old water dispute between the two states, officials said. The Jharkhand government on Tuesday night released a list of 44 recruitment exams that have been cancelled due to irregularities, amid student protests over the issue. Issuing eight notifications late at night, the Jharkhand government said the cancelled exams include those conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and outsourced agency TSR Data Processing Pvt Ltd (TDPL) since 2014. The exams cancelled include recruitment for drug inspectors, assistant professors, deputy collectors, dental doctors, assistant engineers, civil judges, additional public prosecutors and forest range officers among others. The state government, after a cabinet meeting on Monday, announced the cancellation of the JSSC-Combined Graduate Level (CGL) examination, one of the key demands of protesting students, as well as all examinations conducted by outsourced agency TDPL and the results published by it.

BJP leaders staged a protest outside Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren's residence here on Monday, demanding a CBI probe into the alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations in the state. At the sit-in led by the party's state unit chief Aditya Sahu and Leader of Opposition Babulal Marandi, the protesters were seen raising slogans and holding up placards with demands such as "stop playing with students' future" and "recommend a CBI probe into irregularities in JPSC examination". A police official said several BJP leaders, including Sahu and Marandi, have been detained. The Jharkhand government on Saturday held talks with the Devendra Nath Mahto-led faction of the protesting job aspirants over the alleged paper leaks. The meeting began at the state guest house in Ranchi as Mahto's fast over the issue entered its seventh day. An eight-member delegation of the grouping was meeting government officials following massive protests in the state capital over the last two weeks. "We have been demanding immediate cancellation of the 14th Jharkhand PSC Civil Services Examination, and all exams conducted by that agency," Mahto, a Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha (JLKM) leader, told PTI. The protesters are also seeking an independent probe into the alleged irregularities, either by the CBI or by a panel of retired high court judges from outside the state.
As the agitation over alleged irregularities in Jharkhand recruitment examinations entered its 14th day, talks between the state government and student protesters on Friday failed to break the deadlock, with students deciding to continue their protest and hunger strike until their demands, including cancellation of the 14th JPSC examination, are met. The protest against alleged examination irregularities in Jharkhand intensified on Thursday with opposition MLAs protesting on Assembly premises on the first day of its Monsoon Session, as the stir gained steam over the past 13 days with six demonstrators on hunger strike. The Jharkhand government on Tuesday tabled in the assembly a Rs 1.58 lakh crore budget for the 2026-27 fiscal, and announced a scheme for women engaged in agricultural activities. The JMM-led government had in 2025-26 presented a Rs 1.45 lakh crore budget. "I lay on the table of the House a budget of Rs 1,58,560 crore for the 2026-27 financial year," Finance Minister Radhakrishna Kishore said in the assembly. The budget will meet the aspirations of every section of society, including the poor, farmers, tribals and women, Kishore asserted. "'Abua Dishom' (our own) budget will bring a smile on the faces of Jharkhand citizens and wipe tears of the poor... The 'Mahila Khushhali Yojna' for women farmers is being introduced. Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Saturday appeared before an MP-MLA court here in connection with a case related to alleged non-compliance of ED summons, a lawyer said. The CM also filed two bail bonds each for Rs 7,000, and the next hearing in the case will be on December 12, he said. On the direction of the Jharkhand High Court, the chief minister appeared before the MP-MLA court today. Henceforth, the CM does not need to appear in person," Soren's counsel Pradip Chandra said. The Jharkhand government on Friday tabled a supplementary budget of Rs 4,296.62 crore in the assembly for the current fiscal 2025-26. Finance Minister Radhakrishna Kishore tabled the first supplementary budget for this financial year. The debate on the demands is scheduled to be held on August 25. The supplementary demands for the current fiscal were initially scheduled to be presented on August 4, but could not be tabled as the House was adjourned sine die as a mark of respect to former chief minister Shibu Soren, who died on that day. Earlier in March, Kishore tabled the annual budget of Rs 1.45 lakh crore for the financial year 2025-26 in the state assembly.
A day after veteran tribal leader Shibu Soren, fondly known as 'Dishom Guru', died, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren said that his father's fight against injustice would continue. The CM also said he was passing through the most difficult phase of his life after the demise of his father. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) co-founder breathed his last at a Delhi hospital at the age of 81 after battling illness. "I am passing through the most difficult phase of my life; the pillar of Jharkhand's soul is gone. No book can explain Baba's struggle, but I vow to continue his fight against injustice," the Jharkhand CM posted on X.
