India's PC penetration, at up to 20 per cent, presents a huge market opportunity, and the industry must explore innovative strategies to put PCs in every household and workplace, according to Ipsita Dasgupta, Senior Vice President and Managing Director, HP India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. She said India's GDP growth, its status as among the world's youngest population, and its clout as the second-largest GCC hub globally are differentiating it from other markets worldwide. "The market has been growing at a slower pace than we would like, but really, what makes the market an enormous opportunity is the low PC penetration. India has less than 20 per cent PC penetration," Dasgupta told PTI in an interview. The global PC landscape is poised for a seismic shift as artificial intelligence (AI) PCs are projected to dominate the market, with 98 per cent of all PCs expected to feature AI capabilities by 2028, according to a senior Dell executive. Talking to PTI, Senior Director and General Manager of Client Solutions Group at Dell Technologies India, Indrajit Belgundi said AI PC adoption is significantly growing across all age groups, industries, and categories. "By 2028, almost 98 per cent of all PCs will be AI PCs that come with new NPUs (neural processing units) that run AI tasks directly on the phone. They are designed to be faster, more secure, energy-efficient that will take productivity, creativity, and collaboration to new levels in the workday. It will be huge," he said on the sidelines of the launch of Dell's new AI PC lineup. The growth in the Indian consumer PC market has been on an upward trajectory, driven by gaming and AI-powered PCs. Shipments of personal computers grew 3.8 per cent on a year-on-year basis to 14.4 million driven by demand for gaming and AI-powered PCs, market research firm IDC said on Monday. IDC India, South Asia and ANZ, associate vice president for devices research, Navkendar Singh said the weakening rupee can lead to an increase in device costs, which can impact the price-sensitive SMB (small and medium businesses) and consumer segments but despite all challenges, the India PC market is most likely to witness a low single-digit growth in 2025. The growth in the Indian consumer PC market has been on an upward trajectory, driven by gaming and AI-powered PCs. HP led the market with 30.1 per cent market share in 2024 and 30 per cent share in the December quarter despite a decline of about 1 per cent in annual and 1.8 per cent in quarterly supplies, as per IDC estimates. Taiwanese tech giant ASUS aims to become India's top PC (personal computer) brand having 25-30 per cent market share in two years, with aggressive retail expansion as one of its key strategies. ASUS has already tripled its market share in India from 6.3 per cent in 2017 to 17.8 per cent in 2023, making it the number two consumer notebook brand in the country, said Arnold Su, Vice President, Consumer & Gaming PC, System Business Group, ASUS India. "It took us six years to triple the market share. Our target is to become the number one brand in the coming two years. And to reach number one, our market share should reach between 25-30 per cent. "We will continue to aggressively expand our retail touch points to ensure that consumers from tier-3 and tier-4 cities can experience ASUS technology without having to travel to metro cities," he said in an interview to PTI.
