Flagship rural employment scheme MGNREGS and housing scheme PMAY-G together account for 75 per cent of the budgetary allocation for the Department of Rural Development, a new report has said. In the union budget for 2025-26, the Ministry of Rural Development was allocated Rs 1,90,406 crore. The Department of Rural Development, which implements programmes to provide employment in rural areas, support economic development and ensure livelihood and social security for the poor and vulnerable, was allocated Rs 1,87,755 crore, 8 per cent higher than the revised estimates of 2024-25, while the Department of Land Resources was allocated Rs 2,651 crore, 35 per cent higher than the revised estimates of 2024-25, the report by thinktank PRS Legislative said. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Wednesday said that as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for housing for all, four crore poor people have been provided permanent houses in the country so far. Referring to an old survey in Madhya Pradesh, he said that permanent houses are to be provided to 16 lakh beneficiaries and the state has got 8.5 lakh new houses as of now. After this, a survey will be conducted again and the government will ensure that no poor will remain without a permanent house, he asserted. Providing of benefits under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) to deceased persons, payment of instalments to those ineligible to the scheme and full assistance paid against non-existing houses have been found during an audit exercise in 10 districts of Bihar, an official said on Saturday. Unrealistic geo-tagging of house locations and payment of instalments in wrong accounts are also among the discrepancies observed by teams of the accountant general (AG-Bihar) during the audit of the implementation of the rural housing scheme in the state. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday claimed that 12 lakh houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Grameen) have been constructed in the state in the last seven years. He claimed that of the 12 lakh houses constructed during the BJP rule in the state, 8.39 lakh have been built in the last two years during his tenure as the chief minister. The Bihar government has warned officials of strict action for delay in releasing the third instalment of funds to PMAY-G beneficiaries who have already completed construction work of their houses, a minister said on Sunday. At least 37,974 of over 35.5 lakh beneficiaries, who have completed their houses till April 13, are waiting for the third tranche of funds under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin in the state, Rural Development Minister Sharvan Kumar told PTI.
