Senior BJP MLA and former Chhattisgarh chief minister Raman Singh was on Tuesday unanimously elected as the speaker of the state legislative assembly. The first session of the newly-elected assembly began here on Tuesday. Chief Minister Vinshu Deo Sai moved a proposal for the election of 71-year-old Singh as the speaker which was seconded by Deputy CM Arun Sao. Leader of opposition Charandas Mahant also moved a proposal for the election of Singh as the speaker which was seconded by senior Congress leader and former CM Bhupesh Baghel. Three more proposals were moved by BJP members in favour of Raman Singh. On Sunday, Singh filed his nomination for the speaker's post and said his new responsibility will be to take everyone together in the Chhattisgarh Vidhan Sabha. Singh, a seven-term MLA, has won Rajnandgaon seat for four consecutive times - in 2008, 2013, 2018 and 2023.
The Bharatiya Janata Party government in Chhattisgarh may have a deputy chief minister, senior leader Raman Singh said on Sunday ahead of a meeting of the newly-elected MLAs in the state. The BJP won 54 seats in the 90-member Assembly in the recently held polls, unseating the Bhupesh Baghel-led Congress government. The Congress ended with 35 seats, down from 68 it won in 2018. The BJP's legislative party meeting, with all 54 MLAs in attendance, is underway at Kushabhau Thakre Parisar, the party's state headquarter here. Three observers, Union ministers Arjun Munda and Sarbananda Sonowal and party general secretary Dushyant Kumar Gautam, are also present along with the party's in charge for Chhattisgarh Om Mathur, Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and co-in-charge for the state Nitin Nabin. BJP vice president and former Chhattisgarh chief minister Raman Singh on Wednesday urged the Election Commission of India to postpone the second phase of Chhattisgarh assembly polls scheduled on November 17 in view of the Chhath festival. He said a large number of voters will not be able to take part in the electoral process due to the festival. Elections to the 90-member Chhattisgarh assembly are scheduled in two phases on November 7 and 17. The Chhath festival will be celebrated from November 17 to 20 this year. Singh in a post on X said the second phase of Chhattisgarh assembly election is coinciding with Chhath puja festival due to which a large number of people will not be able to take part in the electoral process. Former Chhattisgarh chief minister Raman Singh on Sunday said he has tested positive for COVID-19. This is the second time Singh has contracted the coronavirus infection after he tested positive in September 2020. The senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader tweeted that he got himself tested after exhibiting symptoms and will comply with the home isolation protocols. Singh appealed to those who came in contact with him over the past few days to check if they too were infected. Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel on Sunday wished a speedy recovery to Singh.
