Tamil Nadu's main opposition AIADMK on Wednesday welcomed a court convicting the lone accused in the Anna University student sexual assault case, A Gnanasekaran, and said it continuously struggled to get justice for the victim. Hailing the verdict, Leader of Opposition (LoP), Edappadi K Palaniswami said there are no answers yet for several questions raised in the people's court. A Mahila court here held Gnanasekaran guilty in the student sexual assault case. "Why was Gnanasekaran, who was the first to be arrested in the case released immediately? What happened between the release and the arrest that occurred yet again," he demanded to know. Palaniswami, also a former Chief Minister, alleged that the accused, now declared guilty, had great proximity to two DMK personalities, one a minister and another holding a key post in the Chennai city corporation. A technician allegedly working at Medanta Hospital here was arrested on Friday in connection with the sexual assault on a flight attendant who was on a ventilator in the hospital, police said. The accused has been identified as Deepak (25), a native of Bihar's Muzaffarpur, who had been living in Gurugram for some time, they said. A senior police officer said that during the interrogation, the accused revealed that he joined Medanta five months ago after completing his bachelor's in Operation Theatre Technology at a private university here. Police said they identified the accused after examining CCTV footage, interrogating the hospital staff and investigating various facts. "Over 50 employees of the hospital and some doctors were questioned, and footage from 800 CCTV cameras was examined. After multiple analyses, we finally identified the accused and arrested him today. Two women, including a 27-year-old Israeli tourist, were allegedly gang-raped and assaulted while stargazing near Hampi, police said on Saturday. Three male tourists who were with the women were also assaulted and pushed into a canal and one of them was found dead, they added. No arrests have been made yet, but efforts are underway to apprehend the three identified suspects, the police said. The incident occurred around 11 pm on Thursday. After dinner, a 29-year-old homestay operator, along with the Israeli tourist and three male tourists, was sitting by the left bank of the Tungabhadra Canal near Sanapur Lake, playing the guitar, enjoying music, and stargazing, police said. Nine more people were taken into custody for allegedly raping a Dalit girl, who is an athlete, at various locations when she was a minor, police said on Saturday. According to police, 15 people, including a minor have been held in connection with the case so far. The Kerala police have tightened the investigation by invoking more stringent charges under the relevant section of IPC and Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act along with the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) against the accused.
