The government's Swachh Bharat Mission has helped save lives of three lakh children in the country according to a WHO report, Jal Shakti Minister C R Patil informed the Rajya Sabha on Monday. He said under the government's Open Defecation Free (ODF) policy, around 12 crore toilets have been constructed across the country and 60 crore beneficiaries have benefitted from the scheme so far. Replying to supplementaries during Question Hour in the Rajya Sabha, the minister said the scheme has helped ensure cleanliness and also women safety as now they need not wait till evening for defecating in the open. "In the first five years, 10 crore toilets were constructed. In the second phase another two crore toilets were constructed and a total of 12 crore toilets have now been built. Union minister Anurag Thakur on Wednesday launched a special cleanliness drive at Chandni Chowk here as part of the Swachh Bharat campaign, which aims to collect 1 crore kg of plastic waste across the country. The Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Sports and Youth Affairs had launched the month-long campaign, being conducted across 744 districts of the country, at Prayagraj on October 1 through Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan and National Service Scheme affiliated institutions. "We have already collected 84 lakh kg of plastic waste in a matter of 18 days and are set to surpass the target," Thakur told reporters after participating in the cleanliness drive near Town Hall in old Delhi. He urged the youth to dedicate two days coinciding with the Diwali festival to keep the surroundings clean. The Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry will launch a 15-day campaign on September 17 to mark the completion of eight years of the Swachh Bharat Mission, a statement said on Friday. The campaign, 'Swachh Amrit Mahotsav', will focus on mobilising citizen action and commitment towards the vision of building garbage-free cities. Its launch will coincide with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's birthday. Finance Ministry and the Ministry for Drinking Water and Sanitation (DWS) will meet next week to deliberate on ways to mobilise more funds for the Swachh Bharat Kosh (SBK). Established in November 2014 under the Finance Ministry, SBK has been set up to attract CSR funds and contributions from individuals and philanthropists in response to the call given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 15, 2014 to achieve the objective of 'Clean India' (Swachh Bharat) by 2019. "Finance Secretary will chair a meeting on July 12 with me, which will also include heads of 40-50 PSUs to explore ways to get more contributions for SBK," Ministry of DWS Secretary Parameswaran Iyer told reporters here. Total fund mobilised under the SBK as on January 31, 2016 stood at Rs 369.74 crore. Companies contributed more than Rs 42 crore towards SBK as part of their CSR activities in 2014-15. Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan has been approached by the Centre to be the "face" of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's pet 'Swachh Bharat' programmme. This comes months after reports that there was a rethink on the part of the government to sign up the actor for Incredible India campaign after the exit of another Bollywood actor Aamir Khan following his controversial remarks on perceived intolerance. However, Bachchan's name was ruled out after it appeared in Panama papers. The Urban Development ministry had sent a letter to the Bollywood heavyweight on June 20 to "lend his voice and person" and help promote a specific part of the campaign, i.E sale of city compost for use as fertilisers in order to reduce waste being transported to landfill sites, an official said. He said they were awaiting the actor's response. According to the letter written by Mission Director Praveen Prakash, the government was stepping up efforts to encourage converting bio-degradable waste into compost, .
