Telangana govt bans cash wages, brings gig workers under new regulations

In a major policy shift hailed as "gold standard for progressive labour governance", the Telangana government has officially banned cash wage payments to workers, mandated electronic transfer, and brought gig workers under the safety net of minimum wages. A new government order (GO) on labour governance activates the provisions of the Centre's Code on Wages, 2019, completely repealing and superseding the Minimum Wages Act, 1948, across the state. A government statement on Monday said, "Payouts via paper cash are explicitly banned. Employers must disburse wages through direct electronic transfer (NEFT/RTGS/IMPS) or bank check, building an unalterable trail for labour inspectors and protecting vulnerable workgroups." By bridging structural business requirements with social protections, the GO (No 6) achieves an "elegant legal balance," it said. The GO eliminates the "fragmented, friction-heavy industries-wise frameworks seen in other states" and implements a unified, transparent grid

Kavitha announced her party's name at an event held on the city outskirts. Since her suspension, she has been focusing on public issues under the banner of Telangana Jagruthi, a cultural organisation she heads. OMCs say petrol, diesel, LPG supply adequate in Telangana, demand stable

Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) in Telangana on Monday said the availability of petrol, diesel, and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) in the state is sufficient to meet current demand. OMCs have prioritised domestic LPG distribution, ensuring uninterrupted and timely delivery of cylinders, an official release said. Currently, approximately 2.18 lakh domestic LPG cylinders are being delivered daily in Telangana, as against 2,15,151 cylinders per day before the West Asia military conflict began, indicating a stable and robust supply system, it said. Demand for petrol and diesel has moderated and is now comparable to pre-war levels. LPG refill bookings have also declined significantly, as panic-driven bookings by consumers have reduced considerably, it added. According to the State-level Coordinator for OMCs, public sector oil companies are closely monitoring the supply situation and have undertaken necessary measures to streamline logistics and expedite deliveries. Telangana to explore AI tax to offset job losses, says CM Revanth Reddy

Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has said the state government is exploring policies to tax AI companies to compensate people who may lose jobs due to automation. In a virtual address to an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Symposium of Harvard Kennedy School in the US on Friday night, he described AI as a "double-edged sword", warning that risks could outweigh benefits if not managed early. "We will also try to bring policies similar to those on pollution, where polluting industries have to pay for carbon credits we will try to introduce laws so AI firms can be taxed for people credits," said Reddy, who recently completed a five-day leadership programme at the Harvard Kennedy School. Telangana's total debt stands at ₹8 trn as of Dec 2025: Govt report

Telangana's total debt, including that of its entities and government guarantees, stood at Rs 8 lakh crore as of December 2025, according to the Socio-Economic Outlook 2026 released by the state government. The state government said that from December 2023, when Congress assumed power, to the same month in 2025, the total borrowings of the state and its entities amounted to Rs 3,19,179 crore, with repayments (principal and interest) of Rs 3,04,202 crore. The repayments and loans raised by the Congress government during its nearly two and a half years in office indicate that a large share of the borrowings during that period was used to service existing debt, due to the substantial debt inherited from the pre-December 2023 period, the report said. "While total outstanding debt stood at Rs 8,00,805 cr as on 31 December 2025, the increase in outstanding liabilities needs to be interpreted in the context of large and unavoidable interest payments on account of the massive legacy debt...
