Telangana aims to attract USD 25 billion in investments, generating five lakh jobs in the life sciences sector by 2030, according to the "Next-Gen Life Sciences Policy 2026-30". The policy was unveiled on the sidelines of the ongoing World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, a press release said on Wednesday. According to the policy, Telangana aims to become one of the world's top three life sciences clusters. Accounting for about one-third of global vaccine production and 40 per cent of India's pharmaceutical production, Telangana is home to over 2,000 life sciences companies, ranging from pharmaceutical majors to cutting-edge biotech firms, the policy noted. Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has said his government will conduct 'Medaram Jatara', the world's biggest biennial tribal festival, on the lines of the 'Kumbh Mela'. As part of 'Medaram Jatara' or 'Sammakka Saralamma Maha Jatara', tribals worship tribal folk goddesses Sammakka and her daughter Saralamma. The festival will be held from January 28 to 31 in Mulugu district. Participating in a cultural event in Mulugu, Reddy said in a first, the state government held a cabinet meeting outside Hyderabad in Medaram, according to an official release on Sunday. In a fresh incident of stray dog killings, around 200 canines were allegedly killed in Telangana's Kamareddy district, taking the toll to about 500 in the last one week, police said on Tuesday. Sources from villages said (some) elected representatives, including sarpanches, allegedly carried out the killings to "fulfill promises made to villagers" during the recent gram panchayat elections to tackle the stray dog menace. Police said a case has been registered against six persons, including five village sarpanches, for their alleged involvement in the incident. Earlier, police in Hanamkonda district had booked nine persons, including two women sarpanches and their husbands, in connection with the alleged killing of around 300 stray dogs in Shayampet and Arepally villages. The Telangana government has decided to resume the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel project works using advanced tunnelling methodologies, after about a year following the partial collapse of its roof, which claimed eight lives. A portion of the project on the Krishna river in Nagarkurnool district collapsed in February last year. The debris in the tunnel following the collapse, including the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), have been removed, official sources said on Monday. "Some machinery has already been moved to the location to restart the work. Some more machinery is expected to be deployed soon. Experts are being consulted on the safety measures to be taken," the sources told PTI. In a significant blow to the CPI (Maoist) insurgency, high-ranking commander Badse Sukka alias Deva, along with 19 underground cadre, surrendered before the Telangana police, official sources said on Saturday. This surrender sounded the death knell for the People's Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA) and the Telangana State committee of the CPI (Maoist) party. The surrendering group turned over the arms dumps' of the PLGA, including that associated with Hiduma and Badse, a press release from the police said. Sajid Akram, the slain suspect in the recent mass shooting in Australia, visited Hyderabad six times over a span of 27 years after leaving India in 1998, Telangana TGP Shivadhar Reddy said on Friday. He said the Telangana police initiated an inquiry after the address mentioned in Sajid Akram's Indian passport was traced to Hyderabad. During the inquiry, police found that Akram was born in Hyderabad and visited the city for the first time in October 2000 after migrating abroad in 1998 for education and employment. He was accompanied by his European wife during that visit. He later visited Hyderabad in 2004 and again in February 2009, following his father's death, though the visit was not for attending the funeral, the DGP said. Of 10.13 lakh government schools across India, 5,149 have no students at all. And more than 70 per cent of these schools reporting zero enrolment in the 2024-25 academic year are in Telangana and West Bengal, according to government data. The broader category of schools with less than 10 or zero enrolment has also seen a sharp surge, reveals data shared by the education ministry in Parliament recently. The number of such government schools grew by 24 per cent over the last two years -- from 52,309 in 2022-23 to 65,054 in 2024-25. These schools now account for 6.42 per cent of the country's total government schools, the government said in a written reply to questions by MPs Karti P Chidambaram and Amrinder Singh Raja Warring in the Lok Sabha. While Telangana has approximately 2,081 zero enrolment schools, West Bengal has 1,571 such institutions. Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Wednesday said his government is establishing a Rs 1,000 crore fund of funds to support startups. Speaking at the launch of Google for Startups Hub in partnership with the Telangana government here, he said the vision is for Hyderabad to become a hub not just for startups, but for unicorns. He set a target of at least 100 startups from Hyderabad to achieve unicorn status (means companies worth at least USD one billion). "Today, the Government of Telangana and Google are coming together to create a support system for you. My government is creating Rs 1,000 crore startup fund of funds.
