Joint rescue teams safely evacuated 10,450 pilgrims stranded on the Kedarnath route in Uttarakhand's Rudraprayag following a sudden landslide at Munkatiya, officials said on Thursday. According to the officials, the landslide occurred between Sonprayag and Gaurikund on Tuesday late night after heavy rainfall in the region. The debris blocked the main highway and trapped a large number of pilgrims. The District Control Room (DCR) Rudraprayag alerted the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) at 9.16 pm. A rescue team from Sonprayag immediately rushed to the spot with the necessary equipment. The SDRF and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) then launched a joint relief and rescue operation. The joint teams guided the 10,450 stranded pilgrims across the affected stretch. The rescue personnel motivated the pilgrims amid continuous

Ahead of the Ardh Kumbh scheduled next year in Uttarakhand, the Haridwar administration has proposed relocating all raw meat shops operating within the city's urban limits to Sarai village on the outskirts. Haridwar Mayor Kiran Jaiswal told PTI that a proposal to this effect has been drafted and will be presented at the Municipal Corporation Board meeting on April 6. According to the Haridwar Municipal Corporation bylaws, the sale and consumption of meat, liquor and eggs are already prohibited within a five-kilometre radius of Har Ki Pauri, the city's main bathing ghat on the Ganga. Jaiswal said all shops selling raw meat within the urban area would be shifted to Sarai village once the proposal is approved by the board. She added that although the Municipal Corporation has issued licences for only 20 meat shops, many more are operating illegally in the city. "This not only creates unhygienic conditions but also aggravates the problem of stray dogs," the mayor said, adding that onc

Uttarakhand Forest Minister Subodh Uniyal said the current situation resembles a crisis scenario. "With war-like conditions prevailing in several Middle Eastern countries, a shortage of gas cannot be ruled out," he said. To address the situation, instructions have been issued to the Uttarakhand Forest Development Corporation to ensure the availability of wood so that businesses can use it as an alternative fuel in case the gas shortage worsens. The government on Tuesday rejigged the allocation of LPG production, CNG, and piped cooking gas, which will take precedence over all other sectors using natural gas to ensure an uninterrupted supply for households and transport sectors.
