Govt to open 100 institutes for plastic technology

The centre government is planning to establish about 100 institutes for plastics technology under the aegis of Central Institute for Plastic Engineering and Technology (CIPET), India’s only institute where all facilities like design, tooling, processing and testing of plastics are available under one roof. “The government plans to increase the number of CIPET from the current 23 to 100 in next 5 years,” said Ananth Kumar, the Union Minister of Chemicals & Fertilizers, while laying the foundation stone of boys and girls hostels of CIPET in Murthal, Haryana, yesterday.
 
The plastic industry capacity is anticipated to shoot up from present 12 million tonnes to 20 million tonnes by the end of this decade, thus resulting in demand for skilled workforce for the industry. The increased number of CIPET is expected to help in honing the skills of about 4 lakh students every year in the upcoming sector of plastics and polymers. He said, “The government is working to improve skill development and fulfill the PM’s dream of ‘Make in India’. Skill development and ‘Make in India’ are not to be confined to certain pockets but will be spread out throughout the country.”
 
The government plans to upgrade CIPET, Murthal, which was set up in 2005, to higher learning centre which would give the degrees of B Tech, M Tech and PhD. The government is committed to provide one more CIPET in Haryana, claimed Ananth Kumar. Stressing on ‘reduce, reuse and recycle’ mantra for plastic waste management, he said specialised courses for such waste management will be started in the country.
 
CIPET, Murthal, has about 1000 students which are being given various diplomas and certificate courses. The campus is spread out over 10 acre land provided by Government of Haryana. The additional hostel facilities for which the foundation stone was laid yesterday will help to develop 600 more skilled manpower from this campus every year.
 
CIPET, which is an autonomous institute under the department of chemicals and petrochemicals, Union Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, caters to the needs of plastic industries through manpower training, processing, design and CAD/CAM/CAE, testing, consultancy, advisory and developmental services. CIPET operates on hub & spokes model with 23 locations spread across the length & breadth of the country.
