What has happened is really sad and horrific. We promise stringent action against the culprits. We'll submit chargesheet within 15 days and on behalf of the government will plea for death penalty," said Banerjee after the visit. "The culprits who have been arrested were under the support of local CPI(M)," she claimed."I'll not spell out the details of what came up in the meeting with the victim's family. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today rejected the State Election Commission's demand for 1.49 lakh security forces for the first phase of panchayat polls scheduled next month, saying the state did not have requisite forces at its disposal."You are saying that that 1.49 lakh forces are required (in the first phase of polling). Where will we get it given the availability of forces in the state? We do not have that much of forces, how could we give it?" she told reporters here in an oblique reference to the State Election Commission's demand.Banerjee said the state lacked adequate forces and added, "After my government came to power, we had recruited 40,000 personnel in state forces. There were not enough forces in the state at all when we took office (in 2011)."The State Election Commission has said that it is still in the dark about the availability of security forces, and added that the government would be held responsible if the panchayat polls are not held as per schedule

Move to have Rs 650 cr implication for the industryThe jute industry is sore over the decision of the directorate general of supplies & disposal (DGSD) to revise payment terms for the industry.The DGSD has decided to withhold 10 per cent payment made to jute mills for supplying gunny sacks to Food Corporation of India (FCI)."The decision is unilateral and against the interest of the jute industry. It will have an implication of Rs 650 crore on the industry," said an industry source.FCI annually procures around 12-14 million tonne of jute bags valued at around Rs 6,500 crore. The current price (in June) of one tonne of jute bag is around Rs 56,000 or Rs 3,700/100 bags.The jute industry is crying hoarse on DGSD's decision. According to industry, it is a rate contract system and is not applicable to them. Supply of jute bags are made on orders issued by DGSD and production control orders from the jute commissioner. Buoyed by surplus power available from hydro power stations on the backdrop of favourable monsoon rains and increased generation by private thermal power producers, state-run power trader Gridco has floated a tender for sale of 200 Mw power.The surplus power, expected to fetch around Rs 800 crore for the cash strapped power trader, is to be supplied between July 2013 and November 2014 through the open access route.The tender is applicable to firms having inter-state power trading license. Eligible firms have to submit Rs 20 lakh as earnest money deposit. The minimum bid should be to buy at least 50 Mw power, according to the tender notice, whose validity expired today.The notice stated the minimum bid should not be less than Rs 4 per unit (or one Kwh)."We would rather stop selling power if rates drop below Rs four per unit.
