The state energy department has sought clarification from Odisha Power Transmission Corporation Ltd (OPTCL) regarding discrepancies in granting permission for setting up of private power transmission lines meant for connecting power plants with state grid network.The issue cropped up after the department found OPTCL to have set certain conditions on Maa Durga Thermal Power Company Ltd (MTPCL), an independent power producer (IPP) setting up 60 Mw power plant at Tangi near Cuttack, to build a 133 Kv transmission line for evacuation of power while such conditions were absent for other power producers."OPTCL has suggested MTPCL to give an undertaking to hand-over the line after its completion and commissioning to OPTCL. The steel and mines department has pulled up the steel and pellet projects proposed in the state for non submission of financial and physical progress report.A stern directive from the department has asked 36 companies individually to furnish the progress reports at the earliest.Among others, the companies include big ticket projects like Posco, Arcelor Mittal, Jindal Steel & Power, Brahmani River pellets limited , Adhunik Metalicks ltd etc."The submission of physical and financial progress report up to December 31, 2012 has been inordinately delayed which has been viewed seriously," B Behera, Under Secretary, Steel and Mines department wrote to the companies.In January, the steel and mines department had sought the progress report from the steel makers and asked them to submit it by January, 31.The department maintained that even after sending reminders, these companies have failed to comply.

Narbheram Power & Steel Ltd (formerly Scaw Industries Ltd), a firm controlled by Kolkata-based Atha Group, has decided to invest over Rs 500 crore on ramping up output at its sponge iron facility at Dhenkanal."We are going to scale up sponge iron capacity to 0.5 million tonne per annum (mtpa) from 0.1 mtpa. The capacity of captive power plant (CPP) at the plant site will also go up from 8 Mw to 80 Mw. The capacity expansion plan will be fully implemented in 3-4 years," Amit Gupta, executive director, Narbheram Power & Steel Ltd told Business Standard.Besides sponge iron, Narbheram is also producing billets (an intermediate steel product) with an installed capacity of 0.004 mtpa."We are supplying billets mostly to end use consumers in north & south India," said Gupta.Narbheram Power & Steel Ltd (NPSL) had signed an MoU (memorandum of understanding) with the Odisha government in October 2003 for establishment of a 0.80 mtpa capacity steel plant at Gundichapada near Dhenka

Seven out of 36 working public sector undertakings (PSUs) in Odisha incurred losses of Rs 1,009.79 crore in 2011-12, says a latest report of the Comptroller & Auditor General of India (CAG) on PSUs for the year ended March 31, 2012.Heavy losses were incurred by Gridco Ltd (Rs 936.81 crore), Odisha Rural Housing & Development Corporation-OHRDC (Rs 31.71 crore), IDCOL Kalinga Iron Works Ltd (Rs 27.03 crore) and Oidsha Power Transmission Corporation Ltd-OPTCL (Rs 12.73 crore).CAG attributed the losses to various deficiencies in the functioning of the PSUs."A review of three years' audit reports of CAG shows that the state PSUs' losses of Rs 6,485.01 crore and infructuous investments of Rs 7.59 crore were controllable with better management. There is scope to improve the functioning and enhance profits. The PSUs can discharge their role efficiently only if they are financially self-reliant. There is a need for greater professionalism and accountability in the functioning of PSUs,"

Not even half of the Memoranda of Understandings (MoUs) signed by the Chhattisgarh government for drawing investing in the state could take shape in last eight years.The state government had signed 345 MoUs for setting up steel, power and cement plants in the state that had been endowed with rich minerals. "Out of it, 160 industries has started the work on the project," state's industry minister Rajesh Munat said in the Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly Monday.The minister said 185 industries that had inked agreement with the state government for investing in the state had failed to make any progress in the proposal. The companies had not done any work on the proposal, Munat said.Munat had earlier said that the government had been reviewing the progress of the MoUs. Faced with a water crisis, states including Karnataka, have sought assistance from the CentreThe Centre on Monday said it is initiating all possible measures to help states facing water crisis and drought-like situation.
