Who is Shobha Karandlaje?

Born in 1966, BJP leader Shobha Karandlaje is an MoS for the Ministry of Labour and Employment and the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME). She is also a Lok Sabha MP from Bangalore North, Karnataka. Karandlaje hails from Puttur in Coastal Karnataka. Notably, the coastal belt of Karnataka is considered a hot-bed of Hindutva politics.

Early Life
Karandlaje got associated with the RSS at a very early age. The RSS backing helped her get a head-start in her political career. Karandlaje completed her M.A. in Sociology and Master of Social Work from Open University, Mysore, and School of Social Work Roshni Nilaya, Mangalore University. Notably, Karandlaje belongs to the Vokkaliga community, which is traditionally involved in the agriculture occupation and is a dominant group in Karnataka politics.

Political Career
After working at BJP's organisational level in Karnataka for years, Karandlaje finally got elected as an MLC in 2004. Later in 2008, she got elected as an MLA from Yeswanthpur, Bengaluru in May 2008 and was appointed as minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj in the state government. Over the years, she has served as an energy minister and food & civil supplies minister in the Karnataka government.

A confidant of ex-Karnataka CM BS Yediyurappa, Karandlaje even quit the BJP in 2012 and joined the Karnataka Janata Paksha, a political outfit formed by the BJP heavyweight. She returned to BJP only after Yediyurappa decided to merge KJP with BJP in 2014. From then, Karandlaje became active in national politics and became an LS MP in 2014 from Udupi Chikmagalur.

In 2019, she again won from the same constituency, this time by a greater margin. In December 2023, Karandlaje was appointed as MoS for Food Processing Industries.

However, in the 2024 General Elections, BJP high command shifted her from Udupi Chikmagalur and decided to field her from Bangalore North seat from where the Saffron Party has never lost since 2004. Karandlaje went on to defeat Congress candidate Rajeev Gowda from the seat by a margin of over 250,000 votes. Her third Lok Sabha win prompted BJP leadership to induct her as a Union minister.
