North East Delhi

The capital's North East Delhi Lok Sabha seat (latitude 28 degrees 40 minutes North and longitude 77 degrees 16 minutes East) covers 10 Assembly segments of Delhi. The infamous 2020 Delhi riots took place primarily in the Assembly segments of North East Delhi LS seat in which several people lost their lives. The riots occurred just a few weeks after the results of the 2020 Delhi Assembly polls were declared in which AAP won 62 out of the total 70 seats.

Voter Demographic
The North East Delhi constituency exhibits a diverse religious composition, with Muslims forming the largest group at 21 per cent of the population, as per data collected from political consultant Chanakyya. Scheduled Castes (SC) make up the second-largest segment at 16.76 per cent. Other religious groups present in smaller proportions include Sikhs at 1.58 per cent, Jains at 0.9 per cent, Christians at 0.4 per cent, and Buddhists at 0.12 per cent. Notably, there is no recorded presence of Scheduled Tribes (ST) in this constituency

Voters
In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections 1,552,731 people voted in the constituency. According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), there were approximately 17 lakh voters in North East Delhi in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

Candidates
The seat is presently quite popular as the Congress has fielded ex-JNUSU President Kanhaiya Kumar against BJP's incumbent MP and popular Bhojpuri actor Manoj Tiwari. The Parliamentary constituency has a large number of migrants from eastern UP and Bihar and therefore, both the parties have banked on faces with origin from this region. Kanhaiya is an excellent orator and has a good connect with the youths and people from Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh. However, Tiwari has the backing of a robust BJP organisation at the ground level and has been involved in Delhi politics for over a decade now.

Political History
In 2019 LS polls, Manoj Tiwari defeated Congress stalwart and Delhi's ex-CM Sheila Dikshit by a margin of over 3.5 lakh votes. However, this time the contest is likely to be more intense as unlike in 2019, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is not fielding a candidate on this seat as they are in an alliance with the Grand Old Party.

Notably, the North East Delhi LS seat came into existence only in the 2009 General Elections in which Congress candidate JP Agarwal won by a margin of over 2 lakh votes. However, in the next two elections, Tiwari won quite comprehensively.

Interestingly, in spite of BJP dominating the LS polls, it was AAP who won the majority of the Assembly segments falling under this Parliamentary constituency during the 2020 Assembly polls. Notably, 10 Assemblies fall under North East Delhi LS seat and AAP won seven of them with BJP winning the remaining ones.

Notably, the North East Delhi LS seat came into existence only in the 2009 General Elections in which Congress candidate JP Agarwal won by a margin of over 2 lakh votes. However, in the next two elections, Tiwari won quite comprehensively.

BJP's Manoj Tiwari won the 2024 Lok Sabha elections with 53.1 per cent vote share in the north East Delhi constituency, while his opponent Kanhaiya Kumar, Indian National Congress candidate, managed to bag 44.16% vote share.
