There are plenty of content out there for learning — be it for a schoolchildren or working professionals. But, content needs a platform that can integrate scientific, modern learning principles (like micro-learning or bite-sized learning, social learning and gamification), in a mobile-ready format and facilitates live interaction and is not only a library of videos.

Learntron, a learning-productivity tech start-up which raised an undisclosed amount from venture capital firm Kae Capital recently, has developed a similar platform which can be used by any school, institution or company. “We are in essence what Shopify is for e-commerce. We take care of everything ‘technology’ from student payment till content delivery,” says Subbu Viswanathan, founder, Learntron.

Companies can use its platform, which combines mobile learning with live training and engagement, so can schools that are looking at tablet-based education to alter teaching and learning experience in the classroom and at home.

The software and content market for m-learning globally, according to McKinsey, is estimated to reach $38 billion by 2020 and $21 billion for non-content. The market in developing Asia, Learntron’s focus, is worth $6 billion. Excluding pre-primary and higher education (40 per cent of the market), the market size for m-learning is $3.6 billion. Assuming 40 per cent of it as addressable for a platform play, Vishwanathan says the addressable market for Learntron is $1.44 billion.

The company has 20,000 paid users on its platform, across three segments (online learning, corporate and schools), and is growing at 40 per cent quarter on quarter since its launch in January 2016. Its customers include Mahindra Group, Britannia, Delhivery, and schools like DPS Doha, Birla High School, Kolkata and GD Goenka Schools. It is targeting 100,000 users by the end of 2017-18.
