The Morbi-based clock-maker Ajanta group is getting into the manufacturing of mobile handsets.

The company is setting up a manufacturing plant in Morbi with an investment of Rs 150 crore. The plant would come up in two-three months and manufacture 15,000 handsets a day.

Earlier this year, Ajanta had soft-launched P-56 and P-51 models under the Orpat brand. The company had outsourced the manufacturing.

"The response we have got in the past two months has prompted us to set up our own manufacturing plant," says Nevil Patel, director, Ajanta group.

The manufacturing process will be carried out in two phases. The company will manufacture the body in the first phase. Ajanta has already imported the technology from Japan, Phillipines, China and Taiwan.

"Manufacturing at our plant will help us bring down the cost. The instrument will be priced at Rs 4,000 per piece," said Patel.

The company plans to launch two more models -- P-54 and P-55 -- in the coming months. It was targeting to achieve a turnover of Rs 600 crore in the first year, company officials said.

The group is already into compact fluroscent lamp (CFL), mobikes, snackfood and hospitality business.
