Aircraft maker Boeing has said it would build four telecommunication satellites for Intelsat, a leading provider of fixed satellite services.
The contract is the first order for Boeing's 702B satellite series. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
"The 702B, an evolution of the Boeing 702 satellite, offers satellite operators a spacecraft that operates in the medium-level power ranges," a Boeing statement said yesterday.
It has been developing the 702B variant of its 702 satellite for more than four years, incorporating low-risk and proven technologies that differentiate it from its competitors' spacecraft.
Under the contract, the four Boeing-built geostationary satellites — Intelsat 21, Intelsat 22, and two spacecrafts yet to be named — will have capacity optimised to distribute video, network and voice services from Asia and Africa to the Americas and Europe.
City-based Boeing has delivered 33 satellites to Intelsat.
