CESC was the electricity generating and distribution company of the RPG Group.

CESC had signed the memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Jharkhand government on September 15, 2005, to set up a 1,000MW pithead-based thermal power plant.

According to a source, the Group may build another 1000MW capacity plant if another coal block was allotted to the Group.

The company had already deposited a sum of Rs 5.39 crore to the state government for acquisition of land for its proposed thermal power plant.

The state government had also published notification to acquire land for the company's project. Sources in the state government here said that there had been some resistance from some locals against the land acquisition and they were creating trouble. However, the chief minister assured Goenka that he would see that the company received the land for the power project at the earliest.

The company had already been allocated a coal block at Mahuagarhi for the power plant.

The coal block has a total mining reserve of 110 million ton, which would last for 30 years.
