Indian companies raised a whopping Rs 39,025 crore through private placement of debt securities or bonds in January, the highest level in six months.

In debt private placements, firms issue debt securities or bonds to institutional investors to raise capital.

According to latest data available with the market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi), Indian firms garnered a total of Rs 39,025 crore from the debt on a private placement basis route through 259 issues.

This was the highest amount raised by Indian companies via private placement of bonds since July 2012, when they had raked in Rs 57,745 crore through 202 issues.

"In the corporate debt market, Rs 39,025 crore was raised through 259 issues by way of private placement listed at BSE and NSE during January 2013 compared to Rs 26,239 crore raised through 176 issues raised in December 2012,"  Sebi said.

Sebi, however, did not disclose the segment-wise fund raising details.

Overall, Indian firms raised a total of Rs 3.02 lakh crore in the first ten months of the current fiscal (April-January 2012-13), compared to Rs 2.61 lakh crore mopped up in the entire previous fiscal (2011-12).

"The cumulative privately placed amount for the financial year 2012-13, so far, stood at Rs 3,02,668 crore through 2,048 issues," Sebi said.
