Homegrown e-retailer Flipkart has evinced interest in imparting vocational training to unemployed youth in Uttar Pradesh.

The job-oriented training would be provided to the students of government-run Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and polytechnics. Later on, successful candidates would be offered jobs with the online vendor as well.

“We have received a proposal from Flipkart and are examining it. Soon, a meeting will be held with its representatives to give final shape to the training module,” Uttar Pradesh vocational education and skill development Secretary Bhuvnesh Kumar told Business Standard.

A flexi Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) would be signed with the company. A flexi MoU gives companies the flexibility to design training programmes at ITIs tailored to their business and industrial needs. The companies signing flexi MoUs not only provide vocational training, but also offer employment to candidates.

Kumar said similar proposals for vocational and skills training had been received from 10 other companies as well, including Samsung and Wockhardt, among others. “The proposed training programmes are in the pipeline and modalities are being finalised.”

Last year, the state government had signed an MoU with fabrics maker Raymond for training unemployed youth in tailoring.

The government is even willing to bear the expenditure incurred by companies on training if they give job guarantees, Kumar said.

Uttar Pradesh has rolled out an ambitious public-private partnership model for upgrading the employability of 4.5 million youth by 2017. Under this pattern, the youth from marginalised strata would be provided industry-specific vocational training by reputed companies and organisations.

ITIs run hundreds of training modules spanning about three dozen fields, such as agriculture, banking, business and commerce, electronics, fabrication, courier and logistics and hospitality, among others.
