The International convention on clean, green and sustainable technologies in iron and steel industry, to be held in the city from July 15-17 this year, will focus on making steel units in the country more environment friendly.

Global warming being an area of concern worldwide and the steel industry being a high energy intensive industry, the convention will help to identify and innovate sustainable technology.“Steel industry consumes a lot of energy and causes pollution and so the international convention will focus on identifying technology for mitigation of pollution and conservation of resources”, Ashok Dalwai, secretary, steel and mines department of Orissa government and co-chairman of the organizing committee told Business Standard.

The convention will have greater ramifications for the steel industry of the country but the problem of global warming needs to be addressed by all.

“We need to have good mining practices and proper standards for control of pollution. Since Orissa is going to be the future steel hub of the country, sustainable technology has become more important for us”, he added.

This applies to all the industrial and mining hubs. Similarly, the coal burning in steel units causes a lot of pollution and there is a need for technology which minimizes the use of coal, thereby mitigating pollution.

Dalwai said, a number of technologies are known but the convention will help to know the areas of intervention and mitigation measures to be taken.
