After the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation Ltd's (NHPC) Dhauliganga power plant, it is now the turn of the Jaypee Group's Vishnuprayag hydro project to face flak from the local people.

People living in Chai village of Chamoli district are up in arms against the project alleging that leakage from its tunnel was causing cracks atop the hills.

Nearly 33 families in the village have been asked to vacate their houses situated on the Garhwal hills immediately after two to three houses were completely damaged, top officials said. There are 125 families living in Chai village.

The exact cause of the cracks in villages was yet not known. Officials said a technical team comprising geological experts from IIT-Roorkee and Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology would make a detail study before arriving at a definite conclusion.

An alert has already been sounded in Chai village area atop the 400-Mw Visnuprayag project on the river Alaknanda following the appearance of cracks in several houses there. The project was commissioned last year.

The project stopped power generation for one day early this week after one of the transmission tower collapsed due to the cracks in the ground. But since then, the power generation has resumed.
