Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon has promoted the online retailer's India head Amit Agarwal as senior vice-president in a global role, as the company looks to dominate the e-commerce market in the country

Agarwal, who led Amazon's assault in India over the past three years within catching distance of Flipkart, will continue to lead the company's operations in India as the country head.

"This (Agarwal’s promotion) indicates how excited Amazon is about the progress the company is making in India and the opportunity Amazon sees ahead,” Amazon India said in a statement.

Last April, Bezos took Agarwal into his core leadership or S team, to reinforce India's place in the Amazon world as it looks to dominate the last large open market in the world.

So far, Bezos has been investing billions of dollars that has helped Amazon overtake local rival Snapdeal. He still lags behind market leader Flipkart, which revived its business last year after investor Tiger Global took charge from founders Sachin and Binny Bansal to turnaround the company.

Agarwal will also face competition from Chinese market leader Alibaba, which has picked stake in Paytm's e-commerce venture and has launched Paytm Mall, similar to T Mall that it has built to dominate China's e-commerce market.
