Engineering and construction major Larsen & Toubro (L&T) plans to set up a 1,600 Mw power plant in Karnataka, a top company official said today.
"We have bid (for a project) under the public-private partnership (PPP) model along with the Karnataka Power Corporation. This will be a coal-based power plant involving an investment of Rs 10,000 crore," L&T's Senior Executive Director and Vice-President (Power Business) A K Chatwani told reporters here.
The plant will be set up in a joint venture.
L&T has several engineering projects in Karnataka and besides, has successfully built the Bangalore airport project.
Earlier, Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, said his state has given top priority to the power sector as the state was afflicted by power shortage.
"The state is eyeing at least 15,000 Mw of power projects in the state," Yeddyurappa said.
Apart from L&T, NTPC is also setting up a 4,000 Mw thermal power project at Bijapur in the state.
Yeddyurappa said Shree Renuka Infra Projects has been given approval to set up a thermal power plant at an investment of Rs 5,500 crore."
Yeddyurappa was in Mumbai to showcase investment opportunities in Karnataka, whose capital Bangalore will play host to a global investment meet on June 3 and 4.
