Biscuit effect
When Varun Berry, MD, Britannia, said that the customer was thinking twice before buying a Rs 5-pack of biscuits, many were shocked. Soon after, Parle Products said that its Parle-G biscuits were the worst hit in an overall volume decline of around 8 per cent and that it might be forced to lay off around 10,000 people if the slowdown continues.
Workers in auto units were not surprised. Many of these units serve eight biscuits twice a day to their workers along with tea. With the slowdown and job losses, several units have stopped serving tea and biscuits to cut costs, with the result that bulk purchase of these low-price biscuits have gone down drastically.
