Nasdaq-listed Rediff.Com today launched a new service in partnership with the state-run telecom operator MTNL to offer email service on mobile phones.
'Rediffmail NG' will provide people to send and receive unlimited emails from their mobile phones for Rs 50 per month, without paying for any other data charges.
"We are offering an affordable email service to the masses. For Rs 50, users can access their Rediff accounts from their mobile phones, without any additional data charges," Rediff.Com India Chairman and CEO Ajit Balakrishnan told reporters here.
He added that while the service is available for MTNL users in Delhi and Mumbai currently, the company was in talks with other telecom operators to expand the service.
While people can access their email accounts on their mobile phones using GPRS (mobile internet), handset makers like Nokia have also introduced applications allowing people to receive emails on their phones.
Rediff has 11 million users in the country and has a 20 per cent share of the general e-mail market in India, he said.
Rediffmail NG would work across most mobile phone platforms, including Symbian, Java, and Android, as well as on almost all mobile phones in the market.
Users can opt for the new service through the company's website or sending an SMS.
